Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBlurry portfolio thumbnails usually come from one of three problems: the browser is displaying an image larger than its pixel dimensions can support, it has selected an undersized responsive-image file, or the original image is already soft. Compare the grid cell’s rendered width with the intrinsic dimensions of the file the browser actually loaded, then check the device pixel ratio (DPR). Fix the source or responsive markup based on what you find; changing the image format alone cannot restore missing detail.
Why thumbnails look blurry
CSS lays out an image in CSS pixels, while the image file contains a fixed number of pixels. On a high-density display, one CSS pixel maps to multiple physical pixels, so an image that looks adequate on one screen can appear soft on another.

For example, web.dev illustrates the arithmetic with a 500 CSS-pixel-wide image slot: 500 source pixels at DPR 1, 1,000 at DPR 2, and 1,500 at DPR 3. These are explanatory examples, not universal minimums. A 300 CSS-pixel slot at DPR 2 would need about 600 source pixels for a one-source-pixel-per-device-pixel match. Your choice should account for the actual display size and available source, rather than making every image arbitrarily large. See web.dev’s image performance guide.

Other frequent causes are inaccurate srcset or sizes values, an unintended crop, and a source image that is already blurred or heavily compressed.

Diagnose the image the browser actually loaded
- Inspect the affected grid cell. In browser developer tools, select the image and find its rendered width in CSS pixels. Check the viewport and display where the softness occurs; responsive layouts may render a different cell width at each breakpoint.
- Find the loaded file. In the Network panel, inspect the requested image and its intrinsic pixel dimensions. You can also select the image in the console and evaluate
$0.currentSrcto see the chosen URL. MDN recommends checking the loaded resources when debugging responsive images; see Using responsive images in HTML. - Compare dimensions and density. Compare the file’s intrinsic width with the rendered CSS width and the device’s DPR. If the source is too small for the slot and display density, provide a larger candidate.
- Check what kind of defect you see. Softness across the whole image suggests insufficient resolution or a soft source. A subject that looks small, misplaced, or cut off points more toward crop or composition. Inspect the original asset at the same display size to distinguish source quality from thumbnail processing.
Fix responsive images for a changing grid
For a fluid grid, use width-descriptor candidates in srcset and a sizes value that describes the image’s expected CSS width at each layout breakpoint. The browser uses these hints, along with viewport and display-density information, to choose a file. CSS still controls the displayed layout. If sizes understates the actual grid cell, the browser may choose a file that is too small.
Here is a pattern for a grid with one column on narrow screens, two columns at medium widths, and three columns on wider screens. Adjust the breakpoints, maximum container width, gaps, and candidate files to match your actual CSS:

In this example, the width descriptors must match the files’ real intrinsic widths. The sizes values are illustrative: they should reflect the real slot, including the grid’s columns, gaps, and any maximum-width container. After changing the markup, repeat the Network-panel check at each important viewport and DPR. Confirm that the browser’s selected candidate has enough pixels for the rendered slot.
For a fixed-size thumbnail
If the thumbnail stays the same CSS size, provide an image with sufficient intrinsic pixels for the likely display density. Density-descriptor candidates can suit a fixed slot; width descriptors are generally more useful when the slot itself changes with the grid.

When the crop is the problem
Resolution switching supplies different sizes of an image; art direction supplies a different image or crop for a particular display context. If the portfolio tile needs a tighter or differently framed composition, use an appropriate crop rather than assuming a larger version will fix it. MDN explains this distinction in its responsive images guide.
Choose an image workflow that fits the site
You do not need a paid image service just to make portfolio thumbnails sharp. Generate variants in your build or content workflow, or consider an image transformation service if managing many assets manually becomes burdensome.

| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Generate variants yourself | You control the assets and can produce the widths your grid needs. | You manage the variants and keep their markup in sync with the layout. |
| Use an image CDN or transformation service | You have a large or hosted image library and want variants delivered for different display sizes. | It adds a service and workflow dependency; it is an option, not a requirement. |
| Send the full-size original everywhere | Rarely a good default for a thumbnail grid. | It may supply enough pixels, but can waste bytes and slow loading. Chrome recommends avoiding images larger than their rendered size; see Properly size images. |
Cloudflare’s Make responsive images documentation, last updated May 26, 2026, describes responsive delivery and high-DPI variants. Its example notes that a 960-pixel source on a 2x display spans 1,920 physical pixels. That illustrates pixel-density arithmetic, not a requirement that every thumbnail use that dimension.
Do not confuse image format with image detail
WebP and AVIF can reduce file size compared with PNG or JPEG, helping downloads. But encoding an undersized image in a newer format does not add pixels or recover detail missing from the source. First choose a suitable source resolution; then tune format and compression. There is no single compression-quality setting established here for all portfolio photography, so compare the processed thumbnail with its original at the same display size.

Troubleshoot common cases
- Only high-density displays look blurry: Check DPR and whether the chosen file has enough intrinsic pixels for the rendered slot at that density. Add appropriate candidates if needed.
- The image looks sharp on desktop but soft on mobile: Inspect the mobile grid’s actual cell width and the selected
currentSrc. Make suresizesdescribes the mobile layout accurately. - The wrong image file is selected: Verify that each
wdescriptor matches the file’s actual width, and correct anysizescondition that understates the slot. - The file is large enough but still looks soft: Compare it with the original. Investigate source focus, crop, and image-processing compression before increasing dimensions across the library.
- The subject looks cut off or too small: Treat this as a crop or art-direction issue, not automatically a resolution problem.
- All thumbnails download huge files: Check that width candidates and
sizesare present and truthful; avoid sending full-size originals when smaller variants will serve the rendered slot.
