Smartphones make it easier to offload mental work: a reminder can hold an intention for later, GPS can guide a route, and a map can help compare spatial options. That reliance can improve performance on a task without proving that memory or decision-making is generally better—or worse. The effects depend on what the phone is doing, what a person wants to learn or remember, and whether the stored information remains available.
What it means to offload thinking to a phone
Cognitive offloading is using an external action or resource to reduce what must be kept in mind or worked out internally. Examples include setting a smartphone alert, writing a note, following GPS directions, taking a photograph, or searching online. It is a strategy for managing cognitive demands, not evidence by itself of a mental deficit.

The task matters. Remembering to do something later, recalling information already encountered, and learning how to navigate a place are different problems. A phone can help with one while leaving another unchanged—or creating a trade-off.
How phone reminders help with memory
A reminder lets someone record an intention now and be cued later, rather than keeping that intention active in mind continuously. A review of “intention offloading” concludes that external reminders can effectively support delayed intentions. Smartphone alerts are one example, alongside calendars, diaries, and objects deliberately placed where they will be noticed.

People decide whether to set reminders partly by judging how likely they are to remember on their own. Those judgments can be systematically biased, so a person may misjudge when offloading is useful. The review supports the value of reminders as a strategy; it does not establish that phone alerts invariably improve everyday outcomes.
What happens when stored information is unavailable
Offloading can aid immediate performance while making access to the external information important. A 2025 review of retrospective-memory research reports laboratory benefits for task performance when information is offloaded. It also reports poorer performance when notes became unexpectedly unavailable than when participants had relied on internal memory alone.

That result describes a specific contingency, not proof of broad memory decline among everyday smartphone users. It does show why “the phone helps memory” is incomplete: the outcome can differ depending on whether the goal is to complete the task with the aid, recall information later, or cope when the aid cannot be accessed.

GPS can guide a trip without teaching the route
Turn-by-turn directions can reduce the need to work out each next move while traveling. But following instructions and building spatial knowledge—such as remembering how places relate or being able to navigate without guidance—are distinct outcomes.

In a 2020 study, Dahmani and Bohbot examined 50 regular drivers. Greater lifetime GPS experience was associated with worse spatial memory during self-guided navigation. A three-year follow-up of 13 participants found that increased GPS use was associated with a steeper decline in hippocampal-dependent spatial-memory measures. The researchers also reported that heavy GPS users were not using it simply because they believed they had a poor sense of direction.
These findings warrant care, not a blanket claim that GPS damages the brain or harms every user. The initial association does not establish that GPS use caused the difference, and the longitudinal follow-up was small. It concerns spatial-memory measures in the study, not all forms of memory or all smartphone use.

If learning a route is important, a practical compromise is to use the map for unfamiliar or complex parts while also noticing landmarks and the route’s overall shape. That is a way to keep route learning in view; the cited study does not test this specific habit as a proven intervention.

A 2024 review of mobile-map design and use discusses navigation and individual or collaborative spatial decision-making, including cognitive load and map design. This supports a focused discussion of how mobile maps can assist route and spatial choices. It does not establish that everyday smartphone reliance broadly improves or harms decision quality.
How to judge whether to rely on the phone
Consider the intended outcome before choosing between a phone and unaided memory. “Did I complete the task?” is not the only useful measure.
- For a delayed intention: use a reminder when remembering at the right time matters more than rehearsing the intention internally.
- For information you may need later: consider whether you will still be able to access the note, image, or file when it matters.
- For navigation: distinguish reaching the destination with directions from learning a route you may need to retrace independently.
- For decisions: identify whether the phone is helping with a spatial choice, information lookup, or a broader decision before drawing conclusions about its effects.
These are different outcomes, so there is no single measure of “cognitive ability” that captures the trade-offs. Reviews of reminder use and retrospective-memory offloading, GPS research, and mobile-map design address related but distinct questions.
