We added a deliberate Copy URL action in four places, while treating the address as a credential that should only be revealed to someone authorized to use it.
Why device-specific player buttons left a gap
On TipoffWatch, GenreWatch, and WatchNews, visitors could play a channel inline. The existing alternatives were VLC and Infuse app links, using the vlc-x-callback:// and infuse:// URL schemes, plus an M3U playlist download. As chovy describes it in the original account, those app links did not offer a usable playback route on desktop, so the sites hid them there. On iOS Safari, downloading the M3U could result in saving the playlist or a .ts transport-stream file rather than playing it, so the download option was hidden on phones. That is the author’s account of the sites’ behavior, not a claim that every current browser or stream behaves the same way.

The gap was straightforward: each option led to a particular device or app workflow, but users could not get the underlying address. A direct URL can be useful when the destination is something the site does not have a button for. The author’s examples include mpv, ffmpeg, a set-top box, another VLC machine, and a Plex box.
Where the Copy URL action appears
The change added a way to copy the address at the point where a visitor might need it, rather than making the URL a replacement for inline playback or the existing app controls.

The WatchNews channel-page address is described by the author as a public HLS playlist that does not require a session. That is distinct from stream addresses tied to a user’s subscription.
Why copying a stream URL is also an access-control decision
“The address is the credential,” chovy writes. For a user’s own line, the stream URL contains that provider’s username and password. An external player does not share the website’s session, so the site must pass the address to the player for it to connect. A URL can therefore carry access, not just identify a stream.

The author says the controls follow ownership rules: managed-line channels use the site’s reseller credential, while channels in another user’s shared list use that user’s subscription. Those rows do not expose VLC, Infuse, downloads, or Copy URL. This describes the author’s implementation and is not an independent security review.
How multiview avoids putting addresses in bookmarkable markup
A multiview grid needs to preserve its layout across reloads and bookmarks, and it can open in a picture-in-picture window. The author says its markup stores row IDs rather than stream addresses, avoiding credentials in links that may be saved or shared.

When someone presses Copy URL on a tile, the page requests the address from a route that, according to the author, responds only for the session that owns the row. The response uses no-store and private directives. In the reported implementation, a document-level delegated event handler handles the press, so tiles added after page load work without wiring each tile individually; the grid component does not need to know about the button.
What happens when the browser will not copy
The Clipboard API may be unavailable outside a secure context, and a browser can refuse a clipboard request. The author’s fallback places the URL in a selected text field so the visitor can copy it manually instead of encountering a silent failure. The account does not report browser-by-browser compatibility testing, so it does not establish how that fallback behaves in every browser.
