Scientists have tested whether chemicals released by cinema audiences can help predict a film’s age classification. In a 2018 proof-of-concept study, the audience-emitted compound isoprene showed promise for some German age classes—but no single measured chemical separated every class, and the method has not been validated to assign official ratings.
What does cinema air chemistry measure?
People in an audience release carbon dioxide (CO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including through their breath. Researchers can track these compounds in theater air as a film plays. The measurements reflect audience emissions and reactions, not chemicals coming directly from the film.

An earlier study found that cinema-air chemical patterns changed reproducibly over the course of a particular film, including across different audiences. Scene labels such as suspense and comedy were associated with changes in audience emissions. That supports a connection between what people experience and the signal in the air, but the signal can also depend on who is in the room. Stönner and colleagues analyzed CO2 and more than 60 VOCs recorded across 135 screenings of 11 films in two cinemas in Mainz, Germany. The screenings took place over eight weeks and involved more than 13,000 people. The team extracted features from the chemical time series—including peak height, peak width and peak count—and trained random-forest models to distinguish German FSK age classes. The study was published in PLOS ONE on October 11, 2018.

The films represented FSK 0, 6, 12 and 16. German age classifications consider multiple aspects of film content, including violence, sex, antisocial behavior, drug use and bad language. Audience emissions can reflect reactions to content, but they are an indirect signal—not a direct assessment of those factors.
What did the study find?
Isoprene was the strongest single measured chemical overall. Its best reported result was an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.84 ± 0.07 for FSK 0. An AUC summarizes how well a model distinguishes between categories; it is not the percentage of films correctly rated. The authors reported lower precision for FSK 6 and FSK 12, and no single human-generated VOC distinguished all four classes.

The abstract described isoprene as reliably predicting FSK 0, 6 and 12 across a variety of film genres and audience age groups. That promising result needs to be read alongside the paper’s conclusion: no single VOC distinguished all four classes. The study included no FSK 18 films, and the small number of films in each class limited what the results could establish.
Why is this not a replacement for rating boards?
The models fit the films used for training very well, but performance was lower on films held out from training. The authors called for larger film samples and a new validation set before selecting and testing combinations of chemical features. That distinction matters: a model can appear effective on films it has already seen without proving it will generalize to new titles.

Audience composition is another possible influence. A separate real-world emissions study found that average CO2, acetone and isoprene emissions from children under 12 were lower than adult emissions by a factor of about 1.2–1.4; acetaldehyde emission rates were equivalent. The age-classification study considered audience demographics and argued that audience age alone did not explain its FSK 0 result, but population makeup remains a potential confounder. Stönner and colleagues, Indoor Air, 2018.
Not every chemical in a theater comes from emotional reactions. A 2020 study observed thirdhand tobacco-smoke tracer VOCs and residual contamination associated with some moviegoers arriving at one nonsmoking theater. During those studied events, benzene and formaldehyde were reported at parts-per-billion levels, and nicotine-related compounds accounted for 34% of observed functionalized organic aerosol abundance. This is evidence about indoor air in that setting, not evidence that the film-rating classifier works or that all theaters have the same conditions. Sheu and colleagues, Science Advances, 2020.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What would make the approach more convincing?
A stronger test would need more films and an independent validation set, with the model evaluated on films not used to train it. It would also need coverage of all rating classes—including FSK 18—and controls for differences in audience composition and other indoor sources. Researchers would then have to show that the resulting signal supports a clearly defined role. The 2018 findings support further investigation of audience chemistry as a possible research tool; they do not establish reliable automated or official age classification.
