Waze can use more of your phone’s power during a drive because navigation needs location access and ongoing connectivity, and the screen may stay lit. Waze does not publish a battery-use rate or a controlled comparison with other navigation apps, so there is no supported hourly figure—or proof here that Waze uses more power than another navigator.
What makes Waze use power during a drive?
Waze requires access to your phone’s location for navigation. Its Android Auto guidance also says navigation depends on the phone’s GPS and internet connection. Does Waze drain battery when you are not driving?
It can be worth checking whether Waze is still active after a trip, but a report of background activity does not establish that the app is the cause of every phone’s battery loss. A Waze Community Product Expert has suggested setting iPhone location access to “While Using the App” and disabling Background App Refresh, or restricting background activity on Android. What to try if Waze’s GPS warning appears
A “No GPS” warning is a location problem, not proof that Waze is draining the battery. How to keep navigation available without mistaking charging for a fix
If your phone loses charge during in-car navigation, a compatible car charger can supply power while you drive. Check that the charger matches your phone’s charging connector and that your vehicle has a suitable power outlet. Charging helps replenish the battery; it does not lower Waze’s power draw.
Does Waze use more battery than Google Maps?
