Holt described the reveal as a way to establish that the game existed and present the studio’s vision. The announcement came years before full production: he said a small team was working on it around 2020, but development did not really pick up until 2022 or 2023.
Why did State of Decay 3 get revealed so early?
In an interview published by The Game Business on October 6, 2026, Holt said uncertainty about Microsoft’s plans was part of his reason for announcing the project. He worried Undead Labs might be absorbed or divested before it had a chance to present its work publicly.

Holt characterized the announcement as “a bit of a marker on the table”: it told the audience State of Decay 3 was in development and paired that news with a trailer meant to demonstrate the team’s vision. That is Holt’s retrospective explanation of his concern and motive—not evidence that a sale, absorption, or divestiture was imminent or caused the reveal.

Did the 2020 announcement mean the game was in full production?
No. Holt said a small team had been working on the project since around 2020, but development “didn’t really pick up” until 2022 or 2023. The public announcement therefore marked the project’s existence, not the start of a mature production effort.

There is also separate reporting context. PC Gamer reported in April 2026 that the reveal trailer was pre-rendered and conceptual, and that Microsoft had requested trailers from key studios ahead of the Xbox Series X/S launch period. That helps explain the showcase setting, but it should not be conflated with Holt’s stated personal concern.
What happened after the reveal?
- 2018: Undead Labs was acquired by Microsoft, according to the studio’s later account.
- 2020: State of Decay 3 was announced with a conceptual trailer.
- 2022 or 2023: Holt said development began to pick up in this period.
- June 7, 2026: The first gameplay reveal arrived in an Xbox Wire presentation and interview.
- September 2026: Undead Labs said it had become independent and that the game remained in alpha.
What is known about State of Decay 3 now?
In the June 2026 gameplay reveal, creative director Kevin Patzelt described solo play and shared-world co-op for up to four players, settlements, weapon crafting, and a playable area about four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map. These are developer and publisher descriptions, not results from independent testing.

In September 2026, Undead Labs said the game was in alpha, with a closed beta planned before the end of 2026 and a target release in 2027. The studio listed Xbox, Game Pass, PC, and PlayStation as planned platforms. Those plans and dates are subject to change.
