Regular walking may help relieve constipation as part of an active routine, but one walk is not a reliably timed or immediate remedy. The NHS says simple lifestyle changes may make a difference within a few days, though improvement can take a few weeks; that estimate applies to lifestyle changes broadly, not walking alone.
How walking may help
Regular physical activity may help relieve constipation symptoms, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The NHS likewise says, “A daily walk or run can help you poo more regularly.”
These recommendations support walking as a practical way to be more active. They do not establish exactly how walking affects the bowel, how long a walk should be, or how quickly a walk should trigger a bowel movement. Treat it as a regular self-care habit, not a guaranteed way to make yourself go on demand.
How long might it take?
The NHS says people may notice a difference from simple diet and lifestyle changes within a few days, but sometimes symptoms take a few weeks to improve. This is a general timeframe for lifestyle changes, not a walking-specific estimate. The cited guidance does not say that a bowel movement should happen during or just after a walk.

Make walking part of a practical routine
A daily walk is a reasonable way to add regular activity, but the guidance does not prescribe a proven duration or pace for constipation. You can pair movement with these habits:
- Try the toilet after breakfast. NIDDK says trying to have a bowel movement 15 to 45 minutes after breakfast may help because eating helps the colon move stool.
- Respond when you feel the urge. Do not put it off; allow enough time and try to relax your muscles.
- Adjust your position if helpful. Raising your knees above your hips may make it easier to pass stool. NIDDK says a footstool may make bowel movements more comfortable; it is optional, not a required treatment.
- Pay attention to fluids and fiber. NIDDK includes adequate fluids alongside increased fiber in its constipation advice. Drinking extra water by itself is not established here as a reliable fix.
NIDDK’s treatment advice was last reviewed in May 2018. Its suggestions are practical self-care measures, not a promise that any one change will work for everyone.

What counts as constipation?
How often you go is only one part of the picture. NIDDK lists fewer than three bowel movements a week as one possible sign, along with hard, dry, or lumpy stools, difficulty or pain when passing stool, and feeling that not all stool has passed. Bowel patterns vary, so symptoms and stool consistency matter too.

Seek prompt medical attention if constipation comes with rectal bleeding or blood in your stool, constant abdominal pain, inability to pass gas, vomiting, fever, lower back pain, or unexplained weight loss, as listed by NIDDK.
The NHS also advises contacting a GP if constipation does not improve, keeps returning, or comes with blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, tiredness, a sudden change in bowel habits, or abdominal pain. If you think a medicine is causing constipation, discuss it with your GP; do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice.
