The fix is not always more oil: some manufacturers recommend a little fat on the plates, while others warn against greasing their nonstick surfaces. Check your exact model’s manual first, then adjust the batter, cooking, or cleaning routine that applies.
Check the batter before adding oil
Too little fat in the batter can contribute to sticking. Presto’s manual for its 03510 waffle maker says batters with very little or no added fat or oil may stick to the grids; Tefal likewise lists a lack of fat as a possible cause for its Waffle Time WD150818. Check the recipe and your appliance manual before changing the ingredients. (Presto manual; Tefal support)

Oil is not a universal cure. Oster Canada says either too much or too little oil can cause sticking and notes that batter may stick if yolks are left out. Treat that as guidance from Oster for its waffle makers, not a rule that applies to every recipe. Tefal also lists too much sugar as a possible cause, but does not give a sugar limit. If a batch sticks, review the recipe rather than guessing at a new oil or sugar quantity. (Oster Canada FAQ; Tefal support)
Grease the plates only if your model allows it
Manufacturers differ on whether to oil the cooking plates. Follow the instructions for your particular waffle maker rather than applying a blanket rule.

| Manufacturer guidance | What to do |
|---|---|
| Tefal Waffle Time WD150818 | Tefal recommends applying a small quantity of fat to the plates before cooking. (Tefal support) |
| Presto 03510 | Presto says a light vegetable-oil coating may help with some batters and may be used as needed. It warns that excess oil can damage the coating. (Presto manual) |
| KitchenAid nonstick plates | KitchenAid advises increasing oil in the recipe rather than greasing the plates. It warns that spray-on oil or shortening can leave gummy residue. (KitchenAid tips) |
If your manual permits plate oiling, apply it sparingly; a silicone pastry brush is one optional way to spread a small amount. Do not assume that ordinary cooking oil and aerosol nonstick spray behave the same: Presto cautions that sprays can leave tacky residue, and KitchenAid rejects spray-on oils for its plates.
Let the waffle maker preheat and the waffle finish cooking
Use your appliance’s preheating and cooking instructions, and avoid opening it early. Presto’s 03510 manual says to preheat the appliance and identifies the point when escaping steam stops as a useful doneness cue for that model. That cue is not a universal timer or instruction for every waffle maker; rely on your own manual and recipe.

Clean coated grids without damaging them
Old batter or oily residue can contribute to sticking, but scraping or abrasive cleaning can harm a coated surface. Once the waffle maker is unplugged and cool, remove crumbs gently and wipe the grids with a paper towel or cloth, as Presto’s manual directs. Tefal warns against scouring pads and harsh abrasive powders. Avoid metal tools and abrasive cleaners on coated plates. (Presto manual; Tefal support)

- Look up your model’s care instructions. Find whether the manufacturer permits oil on the plates and how it says to preheat, cook, and clean them.
- Review the recipe. Check whether it contains fat and, if sticking persists, consider whether the recipe’s oil level, yolks, or sugar may be relevant. Change one factor at a time so you can tell what helped.
- Use plate oil only when permitted. If the manual allows it, apply a light coating rather than adding more by default; skip it when the manual says not to grease the plates.
- Allow the waffle to cook according to the maker’s instructions. Use any doneness cue only if it is specified for your model.
- Clean gently after use. Unplug and cool the appliance before removing crumbs and wiping the grids, following the manual’s care directions.
If sticking continues after you have followed the recipe and the maker’s directions, consult the support page for your exact model. Part availability can vary: KRUPS’s support page for model GQ502D51 lists its top and bottom plates as no longer available to order, so it does not establish that replacement plates can currently be purchased.
