For U.S. shoppers comparing current official hardware prices, Nintendo Switch 2 is the lower-cost console upfront. Nintendo’s U.S. MSRP is $499.99, compared with $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $649.99 for the disc-equipped PS5. But the console price alone does not settle which system costs less: your games, preferred format, any membership you choose, and whether a bundle includes things you would buy all affect the total.
How do the current U.S. console prices compare?
Nintendo’s Switch 2 U.S. MSRP became $499.99 on September 1, 2026, up from $449.99. Sony’s U.S. recommended retail prices, effective April 2, 2026, are $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, $649.99 for the standard PS5, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. These are manufacturer prices, not a guarantee of what a retailer charges today. Nintendo’s price notice says regional prices differ; the figures here are U.S. prices and exclude tax. Sony’s price announcement lists recommended retail prices.

When checked October 4, 2026, PlayStation Direct displayed $599 for PS5 Digital Edition and $649 for the 1 TB PS5—one dollar below Sony’s announced recommended prices. The store listing is a separate, time-sensitive observation, not a replacement for the MSRP. Check the live PlayStation Direct console listing and other retailers before buying.
When is the Switch 2 bundle a better deal?
Nintendo announced a U.S. Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle for $549.99, containing the console, a full download of Mario Kart World, and a 90-day Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership. Nintendo says that is $37.98 less than its suggested retail prices for those items bought separately. That is Nintendo’s comparison of component prices, not an independent estimate of value. Assess the bundle against your own likely purchases. If you want Mario Kart World and expect to use the included membership, the bundle provides those items for the stated price. If you would not have bought the game or membership, their suggested prices are not savings to you. The bundle is a specific offer, not a guarantee of stock at every retailer.
How should you compare the full cost of ownership?
Use the games and services you actually expect to use rather than assuming one platform is always cheaper to own. Compare the same period—such as your first year—and use current prices from the stores where you would buy. Add tax and note any retailer discounts so the comparison is like-for-like.

- Choose the exact model. Compare Switch 2 with PS5 Digital Edition or the disc-equipped PS5; include PS5 Pro only if it is a genuine option for you.
- List the games you intend to play. Price those titles on both systems where available. Do not assume a platform’s whole library costs more or less based on a few games.
- Compare the format you will use. Check physical and digital prices for each intended game. Nintendo says new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 can have an MSRP different from their physical editions beginning in May 2026; retailers set their own prices, which may vary. - Add membership only if it matters to your play. Include a subscription if a game you plan to play requires it for your intended use, or if you value its other features. Do not assume a membership is necessary for every game.
- Account for bundle contents you would otherwise buy. Value an included game or subscription at what you would genuinely spend, not just its listed standalone price.

Which console is the better fit for your budget?
- Choose by upfront price: Switch 2 costs less than the listed PS5 models at the U.S. manufacturer prices above.
- Choose by your actual game basket: Compare the specific titles and formats you expect to buy; hardware prices do not predict game spending.
- Choose by how you play: Whether portable play or primarily television-based play matters to you is a preference, not proof of a lower lifetime cost.
- Choose by buying habits: Decide whether you want physical games or digital purchases, and account for any bundle contents you would actually use.
- Choose by online needs: Add a membership only when its online access or other features are part of your intended use, and verify current requirements and prices for both systems.
There is no established all-in ownership-cost figure here for a typical Switch 2 or PS5 buyer over a defined period. A defensible comparison is your own basket: chosen console, planned games at current prices, membership only if needed, and applicable tax.
