A breakpoint works only when the active debugger can match it to executable code in the process you are debugging. Start with its gutter icon and the line it marks; if those look right, check the debugger, session configuration, and—when code is compiled or bundled—source maps.
What the breakpoint icon tells you
In VS Code, a filled red circle indicates an enabled breakpoint. A filled gray circle indicates a disabled one. A hollow gray circle means the debugger could not register the breakpoint; the line may not contain executable code, or the active debugger may not support that source file. The icon is a useful clue, but its behavior can vary by debugger and language. VS Code’s debugging guide explains breakpoint states.

Check whether the marked line can execute
A breakpoint must correspond to an instruction the running program can reach. Blank lines, declarations, and some positions inside multiline statements may not map to an executable instruction. Move the breakpoint to a statement that runs, such as a function call or assignment, and try again.

Confirm the right debugger and process are active
VS Code includes debugging support for JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js. Other languages and runtimes need the appropriate debugger extension. Check that the required extension is installed and enabled, then confirm the active debug session is for the program that actually executes the file—not a different process, build, or configuration.
In .vscode/launch.json, a launch configuration starts a process under the debugger; an attach configuration connects to an already-running process that supports debugging. Review the selected configuration and, where relevant, its program, working directory, arguments, environment, pre-launch task, or attach details. VS Code launch configuration reference

Check source maps for TypeScript and browser code
When you set a breakpoint in authored TypeScript or browser JavaScript, the debugger may need a source map to connect the file you see to the generated JavaScript the runtime executes. If that mapping is missing or points to the wrong output, the debugger may not stop at the authored line.

- Confirm that the build generates source maps.
- Rebuild after changing the TypeScript configuration.
- Check that the
outFilespattern in the debug configuration covers the emitted JavaScript.

Browser JavaScript
Open the Debug Console and look for source-map loading errors. Confirm the map’s URL or path is reachable by the debugger. A map that exists in the build output but cannot be accessed at the location referenced by the generated file will not provide the needed mapping. Browser debugging in VS Code
Use the Python-specific checks when debugging Python
- Make sure the Python Debugger extension is installed and enabled.
- Confirm VS Code has the intended Python interpreter selected.
- If you use
launch.json, use the currentdebugpyconfiguration type rather than the deprecatedpythontype. - Remove invalid Watch expressions if the session still behaves unexpectedly.
These checks are specific to Python; they do not replace the general checks for executable lines, the active process, and the selected debugger. Python debugging in VS Code

Diagnose the failure in order
- Read the icon: distinguish an enabled breakpoint from a disabled one or a hollow, unregistered one.
- Move it to executable code: choose a statement the program reaches.
- Check the debugger: verify the extension supports the language and is enabled.
- Check the session: select the intended launch or attach configuration and target process.
- Check mapping: for compiled or bundled code, verify source maps, rebuild if needed, and confirm generated-file discovery.
- Apply language-specific guidance: for Python, verify the extension, interpreter, configuration type, and Watch expressions.
If these checks do not identify the cause, follow the documentation for the specific language and debugger. Breakpoint binding depends on that combination; there is no single fix that applies to every VS Code session.
