It is not a proven shortcut to higher productivity or better gaming results: the available guidance supports a more careful point. Poor positioning, glare and degraded image quality can make screens harder to see, while thoughtful setup reduces avoidable visual obstacles.
What visual clarity changes—and what it does not prove
For work, a screen that is easy to read can help people take in information without unnecessary visual obstruction. For play, clear visibility matters when the task involves recognizing on-screen details or reacting to them. In both settings, the display is only part of the picture: its position and the light in the room also affect what the viewer can see.

The evidence supports treating clarity as a condition for screen-based tasks, not as a quantified performance boost. The cited workplace guidance and display standards do not establish that clearer viewing by itself increases productivity, job performance or gaming outcomes. The National Research Council’s 1983 report, Video Displays, Work, and Vision, offers historical background on display work and vision, not current evidence about gaming results: National Academies publication page.
Why screens become harder to see
Glare and reflections
Bright light shining on a display can wash out the image; reflected light can also make content harder to see. OSHA notes that these conditions may contribute to eye strain and fatigue. Its workstation-environment guidance explains the issue and offers ways to address lighting: OSHA workstation-environment guidance.

Position, angle and image quality
A screen that is too close or too far away, poorly angled, or difficult to adjust may be uncomfortable to view. OSHA advises placing the monitor in front of the user, at least 20 inches away, with the top line at or below eye level. Its preferred viewing-distance range is 20 to 40 inches, and it notes that text may need to be enlarged on smaller monitors. These are general workstation recommendations, not an individualized prescription. OSHA also states: “Factors that reduce image quality make viewing more difficult and may lead to eye strain.” See its monitor guidance.
How to make a screen easier to see
- Put the display in front of you. Arrange the workstation so you can view the screen without turning your head to one side. Keep an upright, supported posture.
- Set a comfortable distance and height. Use OSHA’s 20-to-40-inch preferred range as a general starting point. Position the top line of the display at or below eye level, then adjust for a clear view of the whole screen and a comfortable posture.
- Control reflections. Where possible, place the screen perpendicular to windows or other strong light sources. Try indirect lighting and adjust window coverings if reflections or bright light make the image difficult to see.
- Adjust tilt and text size. Change the monitor tilt to reduce glare and image distortion. Enlarge text when it is too small to read comfortably, particularly on a smaller display.
- Use adjustability when the setup calls for it. OSHA describes monitor supports that let users change viewing distance, tilt and rotation. A stand or arm can make those adjustments easier; it does not guarantee better eyesight or higher productivity.
Choosing a display for a task or workstation
Assess a screen in the context where it will be used. Consider whether text and details are legible at the intended viewing distance, whether the display remains readable under the room’s lighting, and whether its height, tilt and rotation can be adjusted to suit the user. A specification that fits workplace procurement may not answer every question for an individual home setup or a play-focused environment.

What the “competitive advantage” claim means
Visual clarity is best understood here as an operational advantage: it removes some avoidable barriers to seeing and interpreting screen information. That can matter in work and play, but the cited sources do not quantify its effect on performance or establish a universal benefit. The practical takeaway is to address the parts you can control—position, reflections, lighting, angle and legibility—rather than treating clarity as a guaranteed route to better results.
