Venmo may ask for your Social Security number (SSN) to verify your identity, enable certain account features, or collect tax information for goods-and-services payments. Those are separate purposes, and a request alone does not prove that a message or link is legitimate. Check the request inside Venmo’s app before sharing sensitive information.
Why Venmo may ask for your SSN
Venmo says it collects identity information to verify users and meet requirements it describes for a regulated money-transfer service. Identity verification may also be needed for account features such as using a Venmo balance or accessing higher transfer limits. Venmo’s Social Security Number help page describes the service as “a money transfer business regulated by the United States Treasury Department.” Venmo’s SSN verification information

Venmo also says verification is required for users with access to a balance. It may request verification from people receiving goods-and-services payments or becoming an organization-account manager. These are Venmo’s stated triggers; the exact reason for a prompt depends on the account and the wording shown.

Identity verification and tax information are different requests
Identity verification concerns who you are and may affect access to account features or limits. A tax-information request is associated with reportable goods-and-services activity. Venmo says tax holds or 24% backup withholding may apply when an applicable reporting threshold is reached and tax ID information is missing, incorrect, or unverified. Venmo’s tax FAQ
Venmo’s guidance for tax year 2025 describes the federal Form 1099-K threshold as more than $20,000 and more than 200 separate goods-and-services transactions. That figure applies to the 2025 tax year, not indefinitely; Venmo also notes that some states have lower thresholds. This is not tax advice, and the federal threshold alone does not determine every person’s reporting situation. Venmo says friends-and-family transfers are outside this particular 1099-K treatment unless a payment is identified as a purchase. Venmo’s tax FAQ
| Request type | Typical purpose or trigger | What may happen if you do not respond |
|---|---|---|
| Identity verification | Account activity or status such as balance access, stated transfer triggers, goods-and-services payments, or organization-account responsibilities. | Some features, including balance use or higher limits, may be unavailable or limited. |
| Tax information | Goods-and-services activity subject to applicable tax reporting requirements. | At a relevant threshold, Venmo says tax holds or 24% backup withholding may apply if tax ID information is missing, incorrect, or unverified. |
How to respond safely
- Open Venmo yourself. Launch the mobile app directly rather than tapping a link in an unsolicited email or text.
- Check the verification screen. Venmo’s listed route is Me > Settings > Identity Verification. Venmo says this workflow is available in the mobile app, not on its website. Venmo’s SSN verification information
- Use only a channel Venmo identifies for documents. Venmo says it does not request identity documents directly by text message or email. It identifies in-app forms, in-app chat, and a secure document-upload form as document channels. If you are unsure, contact support through the app instead of following a message link. Venmo’s security guidance
- Ask support to correct inaccurate details. If the name or other information in the verification flow is wrong, Venmo directs users to its support team. Do not submit sensitive documents to an address or page you have not verified. Venmo’s SSN verification information
Venmo’s security guidance also says: “Nobody at Venmo will ever contact you to request a password or verification code for your account.” That warning does not establish whether a particular SSN prompt is genuine; verify the specific request inside the app. Venmo’s security guidance
What if you do not have an SSN or ITIN?
Venmo says users without an SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) cannot complete identity verification, but may continue using the service without verification subject to limitations. This describes Venmo’s policy; it is not a conclusion about every user’s legal eligibility or rights. For your account’s available options, ask Venmo support through its official app. Do not enter invented information or send documents through an unverified channel.
