To download a video from a website on an iPhone, the site must provide a downloadable file or link: open it in Safari, touch and hold the link, then tap Download Linked File if that option appears. Find the result in Files > Browse > Downloads. If the video is only available as a stream, use the service’s own offline-viewing feature instead; that usually keeps the download inside its app rather than saving a video file to Files or Photos.
First decide what “download” means
An iPhone can hold a video file you can locate in Files, or an app can store a copy for offline playback. Those are different outcomes. Safari’s documented download action applies when a webpage provides a link to a file; it is not a universal way to extract video from every embedded player. Apple’s Safari guidance describes downloading linked files, while its Files guidance explains where internet downloads appear.

- Need a video file? Use a site-provided download link and save the file in Files.
- Want to watch a stream without internet? Use the streaming service’s official offline feature, if the video and your account or location are eligible.
Download a video file from a website with Safari
- Open the webpage in Safari and look for the site’s own download control or a link to the video file.
- Touch and hold the link. If Safari offers Download Linked File, tap it. If the option is absent, the page may not provide a downloadable file for Safari to save.
- Tap Safari’s Downloads button to check progress or access downloaded items.
- To find the saved video, open Files, tap Browse, then tap Downloads.
The result is a file in Files. Apple’s cited instructions do not say that every downloaded video is automatically added to Photos. The exact controls can vary with the website and iOS version.

Watch YouTube videos offline in the YouTube app
For eligible videos, sign in to the YouTube app and use the video’s Download option. YouTube says Premium members can watch videos they have downloaded in the app; some videos are also downloadable in select locations without that Premium route. To find offline videos, open the You tab and go to downloads. This is in-app playback, not a general MP4 download into Files.

Offline availability and reconnection rules depend on the video and location. YouTube’s offline viewing help gives examples: in some cases, a downloaded video can play for up to 48 hours before the app needs to reconnect; in some regions, non-music content can remain available for up to 29 days. These are not universal durations, so check the information shown for your video and region in the app.
Save your own YouTube upload as a video file
YouTube documents an MP4 save-to-device option in the YouTube or YouTube Studio app on iPhone and iPad for videos uploaded by the signed-in creator. Its creator download instructions say this feature does not download other users’ videos as files; for those, YouTube points viewers to its separate in-app offline option when available.

Download or export a video already in iCloud Photos
If the video is already in your own iCloud Photos library, Apple provides ways to save it to Files; this is not a method for downloading arbitrary web videos.

- From Photos on iPhone: Select the item, tap Share, choose Export Unmodified Originals, select a Files destination (including external storage if connected), then tap Save.
- From iCloud.com on iPhone or iPad: Select the items and choose download. Apple lists options that include unmodified originals, highest resolution, or a more compatible format such as MP4/H.264.

If Safari does not offer a download option
- Check whether the site has a separate download button or an official app with offline viewing.
- If the video plays only in an embedded player and the page does not expose a file link, Safari’s linked-file method may not apply.
- For streaming services, look for the service’s own offline option and check its eligibility, location, and account requirements.
- Use downloads authorized by the site or service, and follow its rules. Whether a particular copy is permitted can depend on the service and applicable jurisdiction.
