A USB-C plug fitting your Android phone does not guarantee that the phone supports the headphones’ audio connection. Check digital-audio support for your exact phone model first; then check audio settings, volume, software, and—if you use 3.5 mm headphones—the adapter. Android phones do not share one universal compatibility list.
Why a USB-C plug may fit but produce no sound
USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guarantee that every phone supports every USB-C audio accessory. Google’s instructions for Pixel USB-C earbuds tell users to confirm that the other device supports USB-C digital audio and note that USB-C audio may need to be enabled in settings. Google also cautions that some devices may not support calls through the earbuds, so media playback and call functions can behave differently. Google Pixel Phone Help’s setup guidance is specific to Pixel earbuds, but the compatibility check is useful: verify the exact phone’s audio support rather than assuming from the port alone.

Phone specifications can provide model-specific evidence. Samsung’s 2021 Galaxy Z Flip3 5G datasheet, for example, lists “Headphone Out: USB Type-C.” That describes the Z Flip3 5G, not every Galaxy phone or Android device.

- Identify both devices. Note the exact phone model and the exact headphone model. If the headphones have a 3.5 mm plug, record the USB-C adapter model too; the adapter is a separate part of the audio connection.
- Confirm USB-C audio support for the phone. Check the manufacturer’s specification or support page for USB-C digital-audio or headphone-output support. Google advises checking the device’s technical specifications or contacting its manufacturer when setting up Pixel USB-C earbuds with another device. Do not infer audio support from a USB-C charging port.
- Check settings and volume. Look in Sound settings for an option to enable audio through USB-C, if the phone provides one. Turn up media volume and test while audio is playing. Menu names and locations vary by phone maker and Android version, so there is no single settings path that applies to every phone.
- Update and reconnect. Install available Android updates, then unplug and firmly reconnect the headphones. Google recommends the latest Android version for its Pixel USB-C earbuds.
- Verify the adapter, if applicable. Check that a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter supports digital audio and is compatible with your phone model. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting page says, “If you’re using USB-C accessories, including adapters, check that they work with digital audio.” A volunteer Pixel Help Community Product Expert also says Pixel phones require a DAC in USB earphones or 3.5 mm adapters; treat that as Pixel-specific community guidance, not a rule for all Android phones. See Google Pixel Phone Help: Listen to music, calls & more on Pixel and the Pixel 6a community thread.
- Cross-test to isolate the failure. Try the headphones on another device known to support the same audio connection, or try known-compatible headphones with your phone. If possible, test another compatible adapter. USB-C charging or other USB functions working does not prove that the port supports audio. If several compatible audio accessories fail on the phone, ask the manufacturer or a repair provider to check the port or software.
Choose an adapter or direct USB-C headphones carefully
If you want to keep using 3.5 mm headphones, look for a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter whose maker documents digital-audio support, then verify compatibility with the exact phone. Do not assume an inexpensive passive adapter will work. If choosing direct USB-C headphones instead, confirm USB-C digital-audio support on the phone and check whether its call and microphone functions are supported. In either case, accessory compatibility details matter more than the connector’s appearance.
#1 Best Overall
- The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
- Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
What the available specifications do—and do not—establish
Google’s support pages offer setup and troubleshooting instructions for Pixel earbuds and Pixel phones, while Samsung’s cited datasheet names USB Type-C headphone output for one specific model. These sources do not establish a compatibility matrix for every Android manufacturer, model, software version, or region, nor do they provide a representative failure rate. Use the specifications for your own phone and accessory rather than treating one manufacturer’s guidance as universal.
