To move your spouse in Skyrim, speak with them and choose the option to move to another home, then select a home you own from the choices offered. If you have adopted children, first make sure the destination has suitable beds and a children’s room. Exact dialogue wording and available destinations can vary with your game state, and reported Hearthfire bugs or mods can affect the move.
Move your spouse to another home
- Check the destination. Make sure you own the home and that it appears as an option when you speak with your spouse. The game does not provide a verified, complete list of homes every spouse can move to.
- Ask your spouse to move. Talk to them and choose the dialogue option about moving to another home. The wording may vary, so look for the move-related choice rather than relying on an exact line.
- Select the home. Choose your preferred eligible destination from the options presented.
- Check the arrival. Give your spouse time to travel, then visit the home to see whether they have arrived.
Hearthfire adds three buildable homesteads: Lakeview Manor, Windstad Manor, and Heljarchen Hall. Previously purchased homes may also be adapted for children. The Hearthfire overview describes these homes and the option to alter existing ones for children.

Moving with adopted children
Before asking the family to move, check that the destination has child-appropriate beds and room arrangements. Player reports describe a children’s bedroom upgrade affecting whether a move option appeared, but that is anecdotal rather than a definitive rule for every home or game state. One player report discusses moving a spouse and children to a specific home.

- Confirm that the destination is a home you own and check whether it is offered in the spouse dialogue.
- If children are moving too, check that the home has suitable children’s accommodation.
- If your spouse is currently following you, dismiss them and check the dialogue again. This is a player-suggested troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix. A player report describes missing move dialogue.
- If the home is modded or you use gameplay mods, consider that they may change the move behavior. A Nexus mod page describes scripting problems affecting Hearthfire family moves.
If your spouse does not arrive
Allow time for travel and check the destination again. Community reports describe inconsistent Hearthfire family moves, but do not establish one reliable fix or a platform-wide cause. If the move still appears stuck, check whether your spouse is following you, whether mods are involved, and whether a housecarl already has a separate assignment at the target home. These are troubleshooting leads reported by players, not confirmed causes in every case. A report about moving a spouse to a specific home and a report about a Hearthfire house describe individual cases, not universal behavior.

Choosing a destination
Use the home offered in the spouse dialogue as the practical test of eligibility; there is no established spouse-by-home preference chart or complete list of accepted homes. If children are part of the move, prioritize a destination with suitable child accommodation as well as ownership and availability in the dialogue.
