A download advertised as a game leak is not proof that the game is genuine—or safe. It may be an unauthorized copy, a fake installer, or malware, and even an invitation described as a beta can be fraudulent. Confirm access through the publisher and an official store before downloading; no available evidence establishes what share of these offers are malicious.
What an “unreleased game” download might actually be
The word “leak” can describe very different things. A file may be an unauthorized copy of a real game, a fake that never contained the game, or a malicious payload using the title to attract downloads. The FBI reported that sites it seized in July 2025 had offered pirated copies of highly anticipated games days or weeks before their official release dates. That establishes that pre-release piracy offers exist; it does not authenticate any particular file or show that every early offer is malware.

There is no reliable market-wide figure for the share of unreleased-game offers that are scams, malware, stolen files, or merely unauthorized copies. The FBI’s figures in that case are specific to the sites and period it investigated, not a general prevalence rate.

How to tell a legitimate beta or demo from a suspicious offer
Check the offer’s source, release status, installation path, and requests for information or payment. These checks can help identify warning signs, but they cannot guarantee a file is safe.

| Check | More credible sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Source | The publisher’s official site or a verified listing in an official platform store. | An unknown file host, unsolicited message, repost, or fan account. A search result or social post is not authentication. |
| Release status | The publisher confirms the beta, demo, or release date through its own channels. | The offer claims early access, but the publisher has not announced it. |
| Installation | Access follows the platform or publisher’s normal installation process. | The download requires a separate crack, key generator, unusual launcher, or unrelated app. The USTR has noted that cracks used to bypass game protection can conceal malware in pirated games. |
| Information or payment | You use the ordinary account process for the publisher or platform. | The sender asks for a password, verification code, wallet details, cryptocurrency, or an unrelated payment to unlock access. |
The FBI and Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warned in August 2023 about malicious mobile beta-testing apps that imitate legitimate apps and can steal personal or financial information or enable device takeover. That warning is about malicious mobile testing apps; it does not mean legitimate game betas are scams. Still, “beta” in an invitation is not proof of authenticity. Verify the invitation directly with the publisher rather than through links or contact details in the message.
Why pirated and fake downloads can put a device at risk
Malware can arrive with a desirable-looking download or a convincing story about why the file is available. The Federal Trade Commission explains that malware can steal personal information, send spam, and commit fraud. In the case of pirated games, a crack or extra installer creates another opportunity to disguise malicious code as something needed to make the game run.

In 2026, the FBI warned that free online video-game content and torrented content can carry malware that turns a device into part of a residential proxy network. Such a device may then be used to route other people’s internet traffic. The FBI’s advice was direct: “Do not download pirated software, such as video games and movies, which often include hidden malware that turns your device into a proxy.”

In a separate investigation, the FBI sought potential victims who had installed games including BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse/DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova. The agency said the threat actor primarily targeted users between May 2024 and January 2026. This is evidence of a specific investigation, not a reason to assume that all games or official Steam downloads are unsafe.

What to do if you already downloaded or ran a suspicious file
- If you have not run it: Do not open the installer or attachment. Delete it, and do not follow any additional steps from the person or site that supplied it.
- If you ran it: Stop interacting with the app and avoid entering passwords, verification codes, or payment details on the affected device. Run current security software and follow its recommended cleanup steps.
- Protect exposed accounts: From a trusted device, change passwords that you entered or may have exposed. Contact your bank or payment provider if you shared financial details.
- Get incident-specific guidance: If the installed game was one of the titles named in the FBI’s Steam investigation, use the FBI’s victim page to check whether the incident applies and submit relevant information. For other suspected incidents, the FBI’s 2026 alert directs victims to IC3.
Removing an app may not remove all malware. The FBI notes that antivirus can sanitize some devices, but more extensive remediation may be necessary if malware persists. Keep your operating system and security software updated, and use trusted stores and known publishers for future downloads.

In its July 10, 2025 announcement, the FBI said records indicated 3.2 million downloads through the most-used download service from February 28 through May 28, 2025, and estimated $170 million in losses in connection with the seized game-piracy sites. Those figures describe a bounded enforcement case. They do not tell readers how common malicious unreleased-game offers are overall, or what portion of downloads contained malware.

Separately, the U.S. Trade Representative’s 2019 notorious-markets review described malware risks in games from download-oriented piracy sites and noted that cracks can be places where malware is hidden. That is useful historical context, not a current malware rate or a complete picture of today’s game-download landscape.
