Windows can keep a record of a USB device after you unplug it. That leftover entry is usually a record of a device that is no longer present—not evidence that the drive is still connected or that something is wrong.
Why Windows keeps a record after you unplug a USB drive
When you connect a USB device, Windows Plug and Play detects it, identifies it and creates a device representation. Windows associates device and driver properties with that representation. Unplugging the device ends the physical connection, but it does not necessarily remove every associated registry entry.

Microsoft calls a physically removed device whose registry entries remain a non-present device or phantom device. That retained record helps explain why an unplugged drive may appear in some Windows views. It does not mean the drive is active.
For USB mass-storage devices, identification uses information from USB descriptors and SCSI inquiry data. The resulting identifiers help Windows identify devices and match drivers; an identifier by itself is not a sign of a fault. See Microsoft’s USB device-specific registry settings documentation.

Windows does not necessarily retain or display every USB device in the same way. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish one retention period for all devices, nor does it say that every old entry appears in every device list.
How to see devices that are not currently connected
-
Open Device Manager.
-
Select View > Show hidden devices. Hidden devices include some that are not currently active.

Microsoft’s Viewing Hidden Devices guidance says that before Windows 8, users had to set the DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES environment variable to 1 before opening Device Manager to show non-present devices. The extra step is not part of the documented instructions for Windows 8 and later.

When a leftover entry matters—and when it does not
An old USB entry on its own generally needs no action. Microsoft says users should not normally need to view non-present devices: “Users should never have to view non-present devices because a non-present device should not have their attention and should not cause any problems.” That guidance is about non-present devices generally, not a guarantee that a device entry is harmless if you are also experiencing a separate USB problem.
If a device is malfunctioning while connected, focus on its current status and problem code in Device Manager rather than treating every historical entry as the cause. A disconnected device’s retained identifier is not, by itself, evidence of a connection, security problem or malfunction.

Device Manager or USBView?
| Tool | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Device Manager | Viewing hidden devices, status and problem codes | Built into Windows; choose View > Show hidden devices to include devices that are not active. |
| USBView | Inspecting USB host controllers, hubs and device information | Microsoft documents it as a Windows SDK sample. The application is older and may not display newer USB information. |
Microsoft describes USBView in its USBView documentation. It queries information from the registry and USB requests, so it provides a more low-level view than Device Manager.

Do not remove registry entries just because an unplugged drive appears as a hidden device. Microsoft’s documentation explains device properties and registry settings, but does not provide a general consumer procedure for clearing all USB history. Its USB registry settings guidance is aimed at programmers, not a routine cleanup task.
