Why Trilium Notes Search Misses Content and How to Fix It

If Trilium finds titles but misses words inside notes, Fast search is usually the first check. This guide explains the search interfaces, filters, query syntax, archive and protection rules, diagnostics, and the TriliumNext 0.105.0 parser issue.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If Trilium finds a note title but not words in the note body, check Fast search first. Fast search is designed for speed and deliberately skips note content. Open Full search, turn Fast search off, remove any scope or attribute filters, and retry with a plain word from the body. Most “titles only” failures are resolved by that sequence.

Trilium can search titles, content, and attributes, but the interface you choose, query syntax, matching mode, note state, and Trilium version all affect what is eligible. The steps below isolate each cause without changing your notes.

What Trilium search actually searches

Trilium has several search entry points, and they do not present identical results. A missing body match does not necessarily mean the index is broken. It may mean that the selected tool is title-oriented, Fast search is enabled, the search is limited to a subtree, or the query has been parsed as an attribute expression.

The current search guide describes note search as searching text in a note’s title, content, or attributes. In practice, use Full search when you need predictable full-text results and visible controls for scope, archived notes, ordering, snippets, and limits.

Fast search is the first thing to test

Fast search searches titles, attributes, and relations, but not note content. It is useful when you need a quick structural lookup, yet it directly explains why a phrase visible in a note body returns nothing. Disable it before changing query syntax or rebuilding anything.

Choose the right search interface

Search path What it is best at Important limitation or control
Quick search Fast interactive searching, including text searches Use Full search when you need explicit scope, archive, ordering, snippets, or result-limit controls.
Full search Body content, titles, attributes, and relations with configurable matching Fast search can be enabled inside it; when enabled, body content is omitted.
Jump to note Locating a note by title or navigating directly to a note Its initial results are primarily title-oriented. If the title list is insufficient, invoke its full-text search action.

If you are asking, “How do I search inside a note?”, start with Quick search or Full search rather than relying on the initial Jump to note list. If Jump to note does not show the note, use the full-text action offered after its initial results are unsatisfactory.

Eight-step diagnostic sequence

  1. 1. Confirm which search tool is open

Identify whether the window is Quick search, Full search, or Jump to note. For a missing phrase in note content, use Full search or Quick search. In Jump to note, run the available full-text search action instead of assuming the title list represents all searchable text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. 2. Turn off Fast search

In Full search, locate the Fast search option and clear it. This is the highest-value check for questions such as “Why does Trilium search only find titles?” With Fast search disabled, rerun the same query. If the body match appears, the earlier result was expected behavior rather than an indexing failure.

  3. 3. Remove every narrowing condition

Temporarily clear the Ancestor field or subtree restriction. Remove depth limits, label clauses, relation clauses, and any other attribute conditions. Also avoid a restrictive result limit while diagnosing. A note outside the selected ancestor, deeper than the permitted depth, or lacking a required label can be excluded even when its content matches perfectly.

After the plain search works, add restrictions back one at a time. The first restriction that makes the result disappear identifies the cause.

  4. 4. Test a distinctive literal word

Copy one uncommon word that is visibly present in the note body and search for that word alone. Do not begin with a long sentence, punctuation, or an expression containing query operators. This establishes whether content indexing works before you investigate phrase matching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Characters such as #, ~, and note. can introduce attribute or property syntax. If you intend those characters literally, put the term in quotes or escape the special character with a backslash. For example, a tag-like string and a literal string beginning with a hash may be interpreted differently.

  5. 5. Check the matching mode

Compare a plain query, a quoted phrase, and an exact query. A leading = requests exact whole-word or whole-phrase matching; it does not match a substring. Therefore =net will not match a longer word that merely contains “net”. Remove the leading equals sign when you want ordinary substring behavior.

Use quotation marks only when the words must occur as a consecutive phrase. Check spelling and punctuation, then try the documented fuzzy operators in Full search when the spelling is uncertain. The FAQ notes that fuzzy matching is added when exact matching produces fewer than five results, so a small exact result set can behave differently from a broad plain query.

  6. 6. Check note state and note type

Look at whether the note is archived, protected, deleted, or an unusual note type. Current documentation provides an Include archived option in Full search; enable it when an archived note is the missing result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older documentation recorded narrower full-text eligibility: undeleted, unprotected text and code notes that were not archived. That page is historical, and the documentation has moved, so do not assume those restrictions apply unchanged to your installed release. Use the current controls and verify behavior for the specific version and note type you run.

  7. 7. Use the built-in query diagnostics

Full search provides autocomplete with Ctrl+Space, syntax highlighting, and error highlighting or linting. Use autocomplete to confirm property names and operators rather than guessing them. If the query still behaves strangely, use the Debug option; it prints parsing details in the server log and can reveal that a term was interpreted as a property, relation, or malformed expression.

  8. 8. Consider a version-specific parser problem only when it fits

If the failure involves property syntax, check your TriliumNext version and the exact query before blaming a general search defect. Issue #11116 reported an unrecognized-property failure in TriliumNext 0.105.0. In the reported reproduction, the plain search route could discard a filter after the parser error and return overly broad results. That is a bounded parser issue tied to a release and query form; it does not explain ordinary body-text misses. Compare your version with the release notes and reproduce the same property expression before treating the issue as relevant.

Understand Trilium’s query language

Default matching

A plain term uses the normal search behavior. It can match substrings, and the search system can fall back to fuzzy behavior when appropriate. This is the right baseline for diagnosing a missing body phrase because it avoids imposing whole-word or property-equality rules too early.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exact full-text matching with a leading equals sign

Putting = at the beginning of a query requests exact full-text matching. The match must be a whole word or the complete quoted phrase, so it will not find a larger word containing the query as a substring. Do not confuse this leading operator with the equals sign used inside a property expression.

Phrase matching

Quotes require the words to occur consecutively as a phrase. If a sentence has different punctuation, extra words, or a line break between terms, a quoted search can fail even though every individual word is present. Test the distinctive single word first, then quote the phrase only when adjacency matters.

Attributes and properties

The characters #, ~, and the prefix note. can switch the parser into attribute or property syntax. A query that looks like ordinary text may therefore become a structured condition. Quote or backslash-escape those characters for literal searching. When you do intend a property condition, use autocomplete to select a supported property name and remember that equality inside that clause compares an attribute or property value; it is not the same as the leading exact-match operator.

Fuzzy matching

When spelling is uncertain, start with a plain query and then use the fuzzy operators documented for your installed release. The matching guide says exact matching covers the large majority of searches, while the FAQ describes fuzzy fallback when an exact search returns fewer than five results. Treat fuzzy results as a way to find likely spellings, not as proof that every similar word is present.

Scope controls that silently hide a matching note

Ancestor and subtree restrictions

An Ancestor value limits results to a selected branch. A note can contain the exact phrase and still be absent if it is outside that branch. Clear the field while troubleshooting, then restore it after confirming the match.

Depth restrictions

Depth controls narrow how far below the selected ancestor the search may descend. A deeply nested note can disappear when the permitted depth is too small. Remove the depth restriction for the initial test.

Labels, relations, and property clauses

Additional clauses can require a label, relation, or property value. A body match does not override those requirements. Remove every clause, verify the plain text result, and add each condition back separately so you can see which one excludes the note.

Result limits and ordering

A restrictive result limit can make a valid match appear missing when other notes rank ahead of it. Temporarily raise or remove the limit. Full search can order results and display snippets containing matched text; use snippets to verify that the returned match is in the body rather than only in a title or attribute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Archived notes

Current Full search includes an Include archived control. Turn it on when looking for an archived note. Because older Trilium documentation described archived notes as outside full-text coverage, the exact default and eligibility can vary by release; the installed version’s controls take precedence.

Note protection, deletion, and type matter

Historical documentation stated that full-text searches covered undeleted, unprotected text and code notes that were not archived. This is useful context for an older database, but it is not a universal rule for every current Trilium or TriliumNext build. A protected note may intentionally be excluded, and a deleted note should not be expected in ordinary results.

If a note is a different type, inspect how that release indexes it. Test an ordinary unprotected text note containing the same distinctive word. If the ordinary note appears but the special note does not, the difference is note eligibility rather than the query itself. Check the current documentation or release notes for your installed version before changing protection or note type.

When results are wrong rather than missing

Not every search complaint is a missing-content problem. An unsupported property can produce a parser error, and a parser error can alter the resulting filter. In TriliumNext 0.105.0, issue #11116 described an unrecognized-property case in which the plain search handler discarded a filter and returned overly broad output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Debug option and inspect the server log when a query returns unrelated notes, ignores a property condition, or changes dramatically after you add a clause. Record the exact version, query, and options. If the problem disappears when you remove property syntax, investigate supported property names and release-specific fixes rather than rebuilding the entire index.

Symptom-to-fix reference

Symptom Most likely explanation First corrective action
Only titles appear Fast search is enabled, or Jump to note is showing its title-oriented list. Disable Fast search in Full search, or invoke Jump to note’s full-text action.
A word in the body returns nothing A scope, depth, result limit, archive setting, or note-eligibility rule excludes the note. Clear restrictions, enable Include archived, and test an unprotected text note.
A term containing #, ~, or note. behaves oddly The parser treated the text as attribute or property syntax. Quote or backslash-escape the characters for a literal search.
An exact query misses an obvious partial match A leading equals sign requires a whole word or complete phrase. Remove the leading equals sign and retry a plain query.
Quoted text fails although all words are present The words are not consecutive or punctuation differs. Search for one distinctive word, then quote only the exact phrase you need.
Unrelated notes appear after adding a property A property is unsupported or parsed incorrectly; a version-specific bug may be involved. Use autocomplete, run Debug, and compare your release with the 0.105.0 issue report.

A reliable workflow for future searches

  1. Open Full search when the location of text matters.
  2. Leave Fast search off for body-content searches.
  3. Begin with one distinctive, unquoted word.
  4. Keep Ancestor, depth, labels, relations, and result limits unset until the word is found.
  5. Enable Include archived when the note may be archived.
  6. Add exact matching, phrase quotes, or property clauses only after the plain query succeeds.
  7. Use autocomplete and linting for structured expressions.
  8. Use Debug and the server log for parser errors or unexpectedly broad results.
  9. When reporting a possible defect, include the installed version, note type and state, complete query, active options, and the expected versus returned notes.

This workflow separates content indexing from query parsing and scope. It also prevents a historical eligibility rule or a release-specific parser issue from being mistaken for a general failure of Trilium search.
