Choose by the exact account and workflow: whether future chats can improve models, how long ordinary and temporary chats remain, when people can review them, whether memory and connected apps create separate copies, and what an employer’s administrator and contract enforce. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini Apps publish materially different controls, so compare the settings you will actually use rather than relying on a single privacy toggle.
The guidance below reflects the providers’ official documentation available in 2026. Settings and retention terms can vary by country, plan, account type, workspace policy, and product surface; verify the live terms before entering sensitive information.

What “privacy” means when you use an AI chatbot
A chatbot can handle your prompt without using it to train a future model, yet still retain it for service delivery or safety. Conversely, deleting a visible conversation may not erase a saved memory, a human-review copy, an uploaded file held by a connected service, or an organization’s backup. Evaluate these separate questions:
- Model improvement: Can your prompts, responses, files, or feedback be used to improve models? Does an opt-out apply only to new conversations?
- Retention and deletion: How long do ordinary, temporary, deleted, flagged, or feedback-linked conversations remain? Are reviewed copies or backups excluded from deletion?
- Human access: Can employees, contractors, or service providers inspect content for safety, abuse prevention, support, or improvement?
- Temporary mode: Does it bypass history and memory, or merely hide a conversation from your activity list while retaining it for a stated period?
- Personalization and integrations: Are memory, voice, files, browser context, location, and connected apps governed by additional controls or by another company’s policy?
- Workplace governance: Can an administrator set retention and access, and what does the contract for your exact plan say?
These dimensions are independent. Turning off training does not automatically delete history; deleting history does not necessarily remove memory; and a temporary label does not mean zero retention.

ChatGPT: settings and edge cases
Turn off model improvement
- Open ChatGPT while signed in.
- Go to Settings → Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- Check the same account on each device and confirm whether a managed workspace policy overrides the control.
OpenAI says new conversations are then not used to train its models, but existing saved chats still appear in history. Its own wording is explicit: “Turning off Improve the model for everyone does not delete or hide saved chats.” Read the Data controls in ChatGPT article for the current account behavior.
Use Temporary Chat for a non-persistent session
Temporary chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve OpenAI models while temporary. OpenAI may retain them for up to 30 days for safety. If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows normal history behavior. Do not describe this mode as “never stored”; the safety-retention period is a documented exception.
Understand feedback and memory
On individual plans, submitting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can allow the entire associated conversation to be used to train models even after you opted out. Avoid feedback on a sensitive conversation unless you accept that consequence. For Business, Enterprise, and Edu, OpenAI says prompts, responses, and files are not used to improve models unless the organization has a separate agreement; it also says feedback does not permit training on the associated conversation for those listed workspaces.
Memory is separate from model improvement. OpenAI’s Privacy Center notes that deleting a chat does not automatically delete a memory saved from it. Open the memory controls and remove saved items separately when necessary. Workspace administrators and organization policies can also control feature availability, retention, and review.

Claude: model-improvement choices, Incognito, and retention
Choose the model-improvement setting deliberately
Anthropic’s consumer guidance, dated March 16, 2026, says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when you choose to allow it, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when you explicitly opt in through another route. That means an ordinary opt-out does not eliminate every possible safety-related handling path.
Use Incognito for a conversation excluded from improvement
Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito is therefore a distinct control, not merely a hidden history view. Check the current Claude interface to verify that you started the conversation in Incognito before pasting sensitive material.

Treat feedback as a long-retention action
Anthropic says feedback can cause the whole related conversation to be stored in a secured backend for up to five years. Do not send feedback containing confidential context unless that retention possibility is acceptable.
Separate consumer, API, and Enterprise terms
For commercial API services, Anthropic says inputs and outputs are automatically deleted from the backend within 30 days, subject to exceptions including a service with longer retention, an agreement, policy enforcement, or legal requirements. This is not a promise that every deployment has identical storage.
Enterprise owners can configure custom retention for chats and projects, with a 30-day minimum. Project retention takes precedence for chats inside that project, and projects are retained indefinitely by default unless an owner changes the setting. Use the Enterprise retention instructions and confirm the setting with your administrator.

Gemini Apps: activity, temporary chats, and human review
Control Gemini Apps Activity
Signed-in users can review and delete activity, change auto-delete, and control whether data is used to improve Google AI. The default auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity is 18 months. Google lists alternatives of 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. Auto-delete governs activity storage; it does not erase copies already selected for human review.
Use Temporary Chat or turn off Keep Activity
Google says temporary chats are not used to train its AI models and are retained for 72 hours to respond to you and help protect Google, users, and the public. When Keep Activity is off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train models unless you submit feedback; those chats also remain for 72 hours.
Google’s warning is important: “Even if your Keep Activity setting is off, Google still uses your chats to respond to you and help protect Google, our users, and the public, including with help from human reviewers.” Activity-off is therefore not a no-access mode.
Account for review copies and feedback context
A subset of chats can be reviewed by human reviewers. Google says reviewed chats disconnected from an account may be retained for up to three years, and deleting activity does not delete those reviewed copies. Feedback can include the last 24 hours of chat context plus included uploads or connected-app content, so review the entire surrounding conversation before selecting a feedback control.
Other Google settings, including Web & App Activity and Location History, may continue saving information through other Google services. Check those settings separately rather than assuming Gemini Apps Activity covers the whole account.

How to choose for your actual scenario
Personal use with ordinary, low-sensitivity questions
Pick the service whose controls you can find and verify. Turn off model improvement if you do not want eligible future chats used that way, then use the provider’s temporary or Incognito mode for one-off sensitive questions. Delete the conversation and any saved memory separately. Do not submit feedback on a chat that contains information you would not want retained under the provider’s feedback rules.
Personal use involving health, finances, or identifying details
The safest choice is not to paste the identifying data. Redact names, account numbers, addresses, faces, and unique case details before asking for general help. If you must use the service, confirm the model-improvement setting, start a temporary or Incognito session, avoid connected apps and uploads, and understand the stated safety-retention window. A provider’s consumer control is not a substitute for professional confidentiality or a legal privilege.
Workplace or regulated use
Use an administrator-managed plan only after your organization confirms the exact terms. Ask for written answers to these questions:
- Are prompts, responses, files, voice recordings, and feedback excluded from model improvement by default?
- What are the ordinary, temporary, deleted, flagged, and project-specific retention periods?
- Who can review content, under what incident or support process, and are audit logs available?
- Can administrators or project owners change retention, integrations, memory, or export settings?
- Do connected applications, API gateways, backups, or regional processors keep their own copies?
- Which contract, data-processing addendum, and regional terms govern the account?
OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, and Edu content is not used to improve models by default, but an organization can have a separate agreement. Anthropic Enterprise has configurable retention and an indefinite project default unless changed. Those statements describe product documentation, not a substitute for your organization’s contract review.

A repeatable privacy-check procedure
- Classify the data. Mark the prompt as public, internal, confidential, personal, regulated, or identifying. If it is regulated or highly identifying, use only an organization-approved workflow.
- Identify the account. Record the provider, country, app or API surface, consumer versus business plan, and whether an administrator controls it.
- Inspect model-improvement controls. Confirm whether the setting is on by default, whether it affects future chats only, and what feedback does.
- Inspect temporary behavior. Record whether temporary mode bypasses history, memory, and improvement, plus the documented safety-retention period.
- Audit personalization. Review saved memories, voice, files, browser context, location, and every connected app. Disable or remove each feature independently.
- Delete in the right places. Delete chats, saved memories, provider activity, and connected-service copies separately where the product requires it.
- Check human access. Read the provider’s safety and review explanation; do not infer that an opt-out prevents every review.
- Document workplace approval. Save the administrator’s retention and integration settings and the governing contract version for the deployment.
- Recheck after updates. Vendor help pages and interface labels can change, so verify settings immediately before a high-sensitivity session.
Common privacy mistakes and how to correct them
“I switched off training, so my old chats are gone.”
Training and storage are different. OpenAI says saved chats remain after the improvement control is turned off. Correct the mistake by deleting the conversations and checking memories or activity stores separately.
“Temporary means no retention.”
ChatGPT may retain Temporary Chats for up to 30 days for safety; Gemini temporary and activity-off chats remain for 72 hours; Anthropic’s Incognito exclusion concerns model improvement, while organization policies describe deletion behavior separately. Read the exact window before relying on a temporary mode.
“Deleting activity removes every copy.”
Google says human-reviewed chats may be retained for up to three years even after activity deletion. A review copy, backup, or connected service may have a different lifecycle. Ask the provider or administrator which stores deletion covers.
“A thumbs-up is harmless.”
OpenAI’s individual-plan feedback can make the associated conversation eligible for training, Anthropic says feedback-linked consumer conversations may be stored up to five years, and Google feedback can include the last 24 hours of context plus uploads or connected-app content. Avoid feedback on sensitive sessions.
“The chatbot’s policy covers my connected app.”
Connected applications can retain their own copies and may apply separate terms. Revoke the integration, delete the external copy, and check the app’s privacy controls when removing sensitive data.
“Consumer defaults apply to my company account.”
Managed workspaces can impose different retention, review, memory, and integration rules. Ask the administrator which plan and contract govern your account and whether projects or API traffic have separate settings.
Limits of provider documentation
The figures above are provider-published retention or auto-delete periods, not an independent privacy score or cross-provider security test. Official help pages do not by themselves establish comparative encryption configurations, universal certifications, or every contractual term. Availability can differ by account, country, edition, administrator policy, and feature. For high-sensitivity or regulated deployments, obtain a legal, security, and procurement review in addition to checking the in-product controls.
