Why Thunderstorms Cause Power Outages and Internet Disruptions

Thunderstorms can damage local power lines and electrical equipment, while outages or direct storm damage can disrupt internet networks. Learn why the two services may recover at different times.

Thunderstorms can knock out power when wind brings trees or limbs onto local lines, or lightning damages electrical equipment such as transformers and substations. Internet service can fail as a result of lost power to household or provider equipment—or because storm damage affects communications facilities or network links. These are connected but separate systems, so electricity returning does not guarantee that internet service will return at the same time.

How a thunderstorm interrupts electricity

Wind and falling trees damage local lines

Strong straight-line winds can topple trees and power lines. The Congressional Research Service says trees and limbs damaging local distribution infrastructure account for most weather-related power outages; that finding covers weather broadly, not thunderstorms alone. Local distribution lines carry electricity to homes and businesses, so damage there can interrupt service even when larger transmission lines remain intact. Congressional Research Service overview

Lightning can damage equipment miles away

A lightning strike does not have to hit a home to cause an outage. The National Weather Service explains that a strike can damage a pole-mounted transformer or a substation and interrupt electricity delivery even miles from the strike. Lightning and high winds can also cause lines to cross, short out, or break. National Weather Service lightning and monsoon safety guidance

Storm-related outages may last from hours to several days, according to the CRS overview, depending on the severity of the storm and the resulting damage. That broad weather-related range is not a prediction for a particular thunderstorm or outage.

Why internet service can fail when power goes out

Your modem, router, and other home networking equipment need electricity. If the home loses power, Wi-Fi may stop even if the internet provider’s network is still operating. Restoring household electricity lets powered equipment work again, but it does not establish whether the provider’s network is available.

Provider networks also rely on powered facilities and equipment. The Federal Communications Commission identifies commercial-power disruptions as a communications-network vulnerability, alongside physical damage to network components and backhaul—the links that connect parts of a provider’s network. Why internet may remain down after electricity returns

Electricity and communications service require different equipment and repairs. Power may be restored to a home while a provider facility or backhaul link remains damaged or unavailable. Conversely, a local router or modem may be unpowered even while the provider’s network is functioning. The FCC’s review of Hurricane Michael described damage to wireless-provider infrastructure and backhaul; it illustrates how communications infrastructure can be affected, but does not establish how often thunderstorms cause this kind of damage. There is no single restoration order or timetable that applies to every storm. Grid repairs, recovery or replacement of communications equipment, and restoration of network links are distinct tasks; the conditions of the incident determine what happens first.

What “the internet is out” might mean

Possible fault What it means Why it can happen during or after a storm
Home equipment The modem or router has no power or is not working. A home power interruption can stop local Wi-Fi even if provider service is available.
Provider facility Equipment serving part of the provider’s network is unpowered or damaged. Communications facilities depend on power and can be affected by physical damage.
Provider backhaul A link connecting parts of the provider’s network is disrupted. Storm damage to communications links can keep service unavailable after household power returns.

These are distinct possibilities, not a diagnosis of any particular outage. The FCC’s storm-related public notice identified powering, physical damage, and power surges as issues affecting network elements; it establishes recognized mechanisms, not that every thunderstorm causes each one. FCC public notice on network resilience during storms

How to think through a storm-related outage

  1. If your home has no electricity: household internet equipment cannot operate without power. The provider’s network may or may not also be affected.
  2. If your home has power but internet service is unavailable: the cause may be local equipment, a provider facility, or a network link. The fact that lights work does not rule out a communications outage.
  3. If power has returned but internet has not: electrical restoration does not confirm that communications equipment or backhaul has been restored. The two networks may need separate recovery work.
