What to Consider When Choosing a College in Sacramento

A practical guide to choosing a Sacramento-area college, with advice on programs, transfer planning, 2026–27 UC Davis cost estimates, and everyday fit.

When choosing a college in Sacramento, start with the program you want, the total cost you can manage, and whether you plan to enter as a first-year student or transfer. Then compare each specific school’s major requirements, course availability, commute or housing, and student support. There is no universal best choice: the right fit depends on your goals and circumstances.

Which Sacramento-area colleges belong on your shortlist?

A useful public-college starting point includes Sacramento State, the four colleges in the Los Rios Community College District, and—if you are willing to look beyond Sacramento proper—UC Davis in nearby Davis. This is not a complete list of every private, vocational, or specialized school in the region.

  • Sacramento State: A four-year public university in Sacramento. Its local admission area includes American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake, Sacramento City, and other colleges. Review its transfer information if you are considering a community-college route.
  • Los Rios Community College District: Includes American River College, Cosumnes River College, Folsom Lake College, and Sacramento City College. The district offers degrees and certificates, as well as financial aid, counseling, and transfer-planning resources. Start with its college and student resources.
  • UC Davis: Located in Davis, not Sacramento, but potentially relevant if you are considering the wider region. Its transfer resources include advising and course-planning tools; admission requirements depend on the university and intended major.

How do you choose a program and admission route?

Start with a major, career direction, or credential

Write down the subject or career you are aiming for, even if it is only a tentative direction. Compare programs by required courses, how students enter the major, and whether the credential matches your goal. If you are undecided, look at options for exploring majors and getting career advice; Los Rios describes support through its career centers.

Distinguish direct entry from a transfer plan

If you expect to transfer, choose a likely destination and major before enrolling in community-college classes. Los Rios recommends selecting a transfer destination, consulting a counselor, and creating a written education plan. A course that transfers as credit may not satisfy a particular major’s prerequisite, and requirements differ between institutions. See the district’s transfer-planning guidance.

For a California community-college route to UC Davis, use its transfer resources, including UC TAP, Transfer Admission Planner, and Transfer Opportunity Program advising at participating colleges. The Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) is available for qualifying students and participating majors, subject to its rules. Check course articulation in ASSIST, the official California public-college articulation database, using the sending college, destination, and intended major.

Check admission to the major, not just the institution

Admission to a university or transfer pathway does not necessarily mean admission to your preferred major. UC Davis notes that popular majors may call for additional coursework and GPA expectations; selection also considers academic preparation and available space in the selected program. Review current major requirements and confirm how they apply to your planned term.

Sacramento State’s Associate Degree for Transfer guidance describes a route from a California community college to a saved place at a participating four-year university. To use it, students must pursue an approved degree, apply to the corresponding major, report the ADT, and meet deadlines. Do not assume the pathway guarantees your preferred major or removes that major’s requirements; check Sacramento State’s transfer and ADT information.

How much does college cost in Sacramento?

Compare estimated net total cost, not tuition by itself. Add tuition and fees, books, housing, meals, transportation, health insurance where applicable, and other likely expenses; then account for grants, scholarships, and other aid. The CSU notes that cost depends on factors such as residency and living arrangement, so use the institution’s current cost-of-attendance information for your situation.

Use matched budgets for different living plans

UC Davis’s estimated total cost before aid for California residents first enrolling in 2026–27 is shown below. The university presents these as three-quarter budgets; they are estimates, not what every student will pay. The university may revise figures, and aid changes an individual student’s net cost.

UC Davis living arrangement Estimated 2026–27 cost before aid
Residence hall $49,009
Campus apartments $47,590
Campus studio apartments $57,549
Off campus $44,661
Living at home $37,893

These figures are useful only as a UC Davis estimate for the stated year, residency, and living arrangements. For a fair comparison, check each candidate’s published budget for the same enrollment year and compare like with like: residency, housing, enrollment load, and aid assumptions. Start with UC Davis’s cost information and update it when your circumstances or the published figures change.

Ask what aid covers—and what it does not

Los Rios says most students will pay no tuition fees through its Promise program, but eligibility and other costs vary. That is not a guarantee that attendance has no cost: books, transportation, housing, meals, and other expenses may still matter. Review the district’s financial-aid information and determine your eligibility and likely out-of-pocket costs.

What practical factors can change the best fit?

A program that looks right on paper may not be workable if its schedule, location, or support does not fit your life. Compare each specific campus against your circumstances rather than relying on reputation alone.

  • Housing and commute: Estimate travel time and expense from where you expect to live. Ask about housing availability and the likely costs for your situation.
  • Work and family responsibilities: Check whether required classes are offered at times you can attend, and whether the course sequence allows a realistic pace.
  • Course availability and time to degree: Ask departments or counselors how often required courses run and how prerequisites affect your expected timeline.
  • Advising and student support: Ask how to reach academic advising, disability services, financial-aid staff, and other support relevant to you.
  • Learning environment: Consider campus size, class format, and whether you prefer a community-college setting, a four-year university, or a broader regional campus.

A practical way to make the decision

  1. Name your goal. Choose a likely major, career direction, or credential. If you are undecided, compare exploration and career-advising options.
  2. Choose a route. Decide whether you are considering first-year admission, a two-year credential, or a planned transfer. If transferring, identify a likely destination and major before selecting classes.
  3. Verify requirements. Check the target program’s admission rules and prerequisites. For California public-college transfer planning, use ASSIST course-by-course and review the destination’s major requirements.
  4. Build a comparable budget. Use each institution’s current cost-of-attendance and aid information, matching residency, living plan, enrollment year, and aid assumptions.
  5. Contact or visit your finalists. Ask about class availability, advising, housing, commute, work-compatible schedules, and student support. These depend on your circumstances and cannot be settled by a published tuition figure.

Compare finalists on the same questions

Use a simple worksheet so one appealing feature does not obscure a major trade-off. Record verified information for each specific campus and program, and note what still needs confirmation.
