A Minecraft seed is an input to a world-generation system, not a guarantee that every edition will produce an identical world. Java and Bedrock moved much closer to seed and landscape parity around version 1.18, and Bedrock 1.18.30 specifically added support for cross-edition 64-bit seeds. But game version, seed interpretation and what you mean by “the same world” still matter; official documentation does not promise that every structure, cave detail or spawn location will match.
Why can the same seed look different?
A seed supplies input to the game’s world generator. The generator’s behavior depends on the edition and version, so an identical-looking seed string is not, by itself, proof that two worlds should match in every detail.
The major shift came with Caves & Cliffs Part II. Mojang said the update substantially changed generation to create the new mountains and caves, while Java 1.18’s release notes listed a new random number generator for Overworld generation. Mojang’s earlier 21w41a snapshot announcement also said the new generator would change results for more seeds and move features. Those notes document changes around 1.18; they do not establish that current versions still use an unchanged 1.18 generator.
In a January 2022 developer Q&A, Mojang gameplay designer Henrik said, “The worldgen changes in 1.18 were so big that we mostly had to recreate terrain generation from scratch.” That helps explain why comparing worlds across different generation eras can be misleading. Java 1.18 release notes, snapshot 21w41a announcement and Caves & Cliffs Part II developer Q&A describe these historical changes.

Do Java and Bedrock use the same seeds?
Cross-edition seed compatibility improved around 1.18, but distinguish seed input from a guarantee about every generated feature. Bedrock 1.18.30’s release notes say it supports signed 64-bit seeds that can be used between Bedrock and Java to produce the same world. They also say non-numeric seed entries now produce the same seeds as Java.
Microsoft Creator documentation describes Java and Bedrock as having seed parity as of 1.18—meaning the same seed generates the same landscape—“as long as the seed value is 9 or fewer characters.” That qualification is narrower than the later Bedrock 1.18.30 statement about 64-bit cross-edition seeds. Read the Creator page as guidance with its stated qualification, not as a universal current rule for every version and input type. The release notes establish seed interoperability; neither source gives a blanket promise that every structure, cave detail or spawn will be identical.

What does “the same world” mean?
Check what differs before concluding that the seed failed to transfer. Broad terrain and landscape parity is not the same claim as an exact match for every generated object. Mojang’s Bedrock Seed Picker FAQ says Caves & Cliffs Part II changed generation substantially and that generation would be much closer in parity with Java; it also explains that the seed picker needed refreshing so suggested seeds would keep leading to intended biomes and features in new worlds.

- Terrain or landscape: Compare the broad shape of the Overworld, such as mountains, valleys and coastlines.
- Biomes: Check whether the same biome appears around the same coordinates.
- Individual features: A structure, cave detail or other feature at a particular spot is a more specific comparison. The cited official sources do not establish that all such features must match across editions.
- Spawn: A different starting location does not, on its own, prove that the whole landscape differs.
Mojang gameplay developer Pouya described Java and Bedrock teams working side by side to stay as close to parity as possible when developing new features. That describes the development approach, not a promise of complete parity. The Bedrock Seed Picker FAQ and developer Q&A provide that context.

- Match the seed input exactly. Check every character, including a minus sign and any letters. Bedrock 1.18.30 documents changes to how non-numeric inputs map to seeds, so record the exact text as entered rather than relying on memory.
- Record each edition and full game version. “Minecraft” is not specific enough: Java and Bedrock are distinct editions, and generation changed around 1.18.
- Compare the same coordinates. A visual comparison from different locations can make matching terrain appear different. Use coordinates and decide whether you are checking landscape, biome placement or a particular feature.
- Check world-generation settings and add-ons. Note any custom generation settings or add-ons before attributing a difference to the edition alone.
This checklist helps isolate common variables, but matched inputs and settings do not guarantee identical output for every generated feature. For the documented seed-handling and version changes, consult the Bedrock 1.18.30 notes, Creator documentation and Java 1.18 notes.
