Use the filesystem, capacity range and speed class specified for your exact camera model, and format the card in the camera when its manufacturer supports that method. Before formatting, copy off any footage you want to keep: formatting erases the card.
Which format should you use?
Check the manual for your exact dash-cam model rather than choosing FAT32 or exFAT based only on card capacity. Manufacturers differ, even across their own product ranges:

- Garmin specifies FAT32 for the Dash Cam X110 and exFAT for the Dash Cam Live. The X110 manual lists support for 8–512 GB cards and Class 10 or higher. Garmin Dash Cam X110 owner’s manual; Garmin Dash Cam Live owner’s manual.
- Transcend says its DrivePro 250 supports FAT32 only, not exFAT or NTFS. DrivePro 250 User Manual.
A filesystem mismatch can cause a camera to reject the card, display an error or fail to record; follow the model-specific instructions rather than forcing a format. Garmin also notes that standard Windows formatting tools cannot format cards of 64 GB or larger as FAT32. That is not a reason to assume every camera needs exFAT: the camera’s manual remains the authority. Garmin: Using a 64 GB microSD/SD Memory Card or Larger.

Filesystem compatibility is only one requirement. Each camera has a supported capacity range and minimum speed class. Garmin’s compatibility guidance lists different limits across models, with some supporting up to 512 GB and older models supporting less. Check the exact camera’s compatibility page; a larger card cannot override its maximum. Garmin: Memory Card Compatibility for Garmin Dash Cams and Camera Systems.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Ideal for dash cams and home monitoring systems
- Designed for high endurance so you can record for up to 10,000 hours with no worries (Actual hours of video saved less. Full HD (1920x1080) video only; total hours less for 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video.)
- Built for and tested in harsh conditions; temperature proof, water proof, shock proof, humidity proof and magnet proof (Card only. See product packaging and official SanDisk website for more information and limitations.)
- Save more videos with capacities up to 128GB (1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Speed class: Garmin’s cited guidance calls for Class 10 or faster on the listed models. Use the rating specified for your own camera.
- Endurance: Prefer an authentic high-endurance card intended for dash cams or continuous recording. Garmin recommends cards designed for dash-cam use because of repeated writes and vehicle conditions. Transcend recommends high-endurance or MLC-based cards for the DrivePro 250. These are manufacturer-specific recommendations, not a universal compatibility guarantee.
- Retention: More capacity generally holds more footage before older recordings are overwritten, but recording resolution and settings affect actual time. Garmin illustrates one 1080p use case as 2.1 hours on 16 GB and 33.8 hours on 256 GB; those figures are not guaranteed for other cameras or settings. Garmin compatibility guidance.
Format the card for the camera
- Identify the exact model. Find its manual or manufacturer compatibility page and confirm filesystem, supported card type and capacity, and required speed class.
- Save important footage elsewhere. Formatting deletes the card’s contents, including incident recordings you may want to retain. Transcend: Why do I need to format the memory card of my dashcam regularly?
- Use the camera’s format command when available. Garmin recommends formatting a new card using the dash cam. On the Dash Cam Live, the path is Settings > Camera > Format Card; its manual specifies exFAT. Garmin: Formatting a Memory Card in a Garmin Dash Cam or in the Garmin Drive App; Garmin Dash Cam Live owner’s manual.
- If the manufacturer requires a computer, follow its exact instructions. For Transcend DrivePro cameras, the cited guidance specifies FAT32 with 32 KB allocation units for 8, 16 or 32 GB cards, and exFAT with 128 KB allocation units for 64 or 128 GB cards. These settings are specific to that product line; do not apply them to another camera without its manufacturer’s direction. Transcend formatting guidance.
How often should you format or replace the card?
Follow the camera and card maker’s maintenance advice rather than treating one schedule as universal. Garmin recommends formatting at least every six months in its cited guidance; Transcend recommends quarterly formatting for DrivePro dash cams. Both intervals are manufacturer guidance for their products, not a universal rule. Back up wanted footage before each format. Garmin formatting guidance; Transcend formatting guidance.
Repeated overwriting wears cards. Garmin advises periodic replacement in its Dash Cam 10/20/30/35 compatibility guidance but does not give a universal replacement interval there. Check your model’s instructions and replace a card if the camera reports errors or recording becomes unreliable. Garmin: Dash Cam 10/20/30/35 memory card compatibility.
