The Moon sometimes hides Jupiter because, from certain places on Earth, the Moon’s apparent path crosses the planet’s position in the sky. This is called a lunar occultation. The two bodies are not close together in space: the Moon simply passes in front of faraway Jupiter from our line of sight.
What is a lunar occultation?
An occultation happens when one celestial object appears to cover another as seen by an observer. NASA’s definition of occultation describes a larger-appearing object, such as the Moon, moving in front of a smaller-appearing one, such as a planet. Jupiter is not moving behind the Moon in space; it is temporarily hidden from view on Earth.

As the Moon moves across the sky, it can cover Jupiter’s apparent disk, causing the planet to disappear at one edge of the Moon and later reappear at the other. NASA’s May 2023 Astronomy Picture of the Day documented Jupiter reappearing from behind the Moon.

Why do the Moon and Jupiter appear close together?
The Moon and planets are often seen in roughly the same part of the sky because their apparent paths lie near the ecliptic, the broad track along which the Sun appears to travel over the year. Their paths are not exactly identical, though. The Moon may pass close to Jupiter without crossing its position.

That distinction separates a conjunction from an occultation. In a conjunction, two objects appear near one another in the sky; an occultation occurs only when the nearer object actually covers the farther one from the observer’s viewpoint. NASA’s guide to planetary conjunctions explains the apparent alignment, while its February 2023 example notes that Jupiter’s occultation was visible from some locations even though the conjunction could be seen more broadly. See NASA’s February 2023 example.
Why can some people see the Moon near Jupiter but not cover it?
An occultation is visible only along the part of Earth where the Moon’s line of sight passes directly across Jupiter. Outside that path, the Moon and Jupiter may look close together, but the Moon does not cover the planet from that location. Exact visibility and timing therefore depend on where you are, not just on the date.

The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada’s Observer’s Handbook 2026 lists a Jupiter occultation on October 6, 2026, visible across southern central and southeastern Canada, most of the United States except the Pacific States, and much of Mexico. Those broad regions are not a prediction for every town; use a location-specific forecast to determine whether the event is visible where you are and when Jupiter disappears and reappears.
What should you expect while observing?
The Moon’s movement makes an occultation unfold over time: Jupiter disappears behind the lunar edge and may emerge later. How long the event lasts varies with the event and the viewing location. For the September 8, 2026 daylight occultation, Space.com’s observing guide estimated that the Moon would take about a minute or more to cross Jupiter’s face, with reappearance roughly 50 minutes later. Those timings describe that event only, not occultations in general.

Nighttime events
When the sky is dark and conditions are favorable, the Moon and Jupiter may be visible without equipment. Binoculars or a telescope can provide a closer view, but they are not necessary to understand the event.
Daylight events and solar safety
Finding Jupiter against a bright daytime sky can be difficult. Binoculars may help locate the pair, as the Space.com guide notes, but never point binoculars, a telescope, or a camera near the Sun without proper solar safety equipment. NASA’s skywatching guide gives this safety warning. Looking toward the Sun through unprotected optics can cause severe eye injury.

How to check whether an occultation is visible from your location
- Find a prediction for your specific location and the event date; a broad visibility map cannot establish local circumstances.
- Check the local times for Jupiter’s disappearance and reappearance, along with whether the event occurs in daylight or darkness.
- Plan how you will locate the Moon and Jupiter under those sky conditions. For a daylight event, follow the solar-safety precautions above before using any optical equipment.
The RASC 2026 handbook identifies the International Occultation Timing Association (IOTA) as a resource for predictions and observations. It reports that most IOTA services, including prediction software and a quarterly journal, are free, and lists annual membership at $15; check IOTA directly for current details.
