Why the iPhone 4 Still Stands Out in Apple’s Design History

The iPhone 4’s glass-and-steel design, Retina display and antenna integration make it one of Apple’s defining smartphones—though “most important” remains a judgment.

The iPhone 4 has a strong claim to being Apple’s most consequential smartphone design: it made glass and stainless steel the defining parts of the phone’s exterior, paired that form with the Retina display, and used the steel band as part of the antenna system. “Most important” is a judgment, not a settled historical ranking. The case rests on how the design joined appearance, engineering and a display-led product identity.

What made the iPhone 4 design different?

Apple announced the iPhone 4 on June 7, 2010, describing a new construction of glass and stainless steel and calling it the world’s thinnest smartphone at the time. That thinness claim is Apple’s launch-era description, not an independent measurement established here. The flat surfaces and visible metal band gave the phone a distinct look compared with the original iPhone’s rounded, curved-back form. Apple’s launch announcement framed the materials as central to the new design.

The materials were substantial components, not merely a decorative finish. Apple’s 2010 environmental report listed glass at 40.9 g and stainless steel at 38.7 g in its iPhone 4 material breakdown. It also listed the battery at 24.7 g, circuit boards at 15.4 g, display at 7.2 g, other materials at 5 g and plastic at 3.1 g. Those figures describe Apple’s report for this model; they are not a general comparison with other phones. Apple’s 2010 iPhone 4 environmental report provides the full breakdown.

Why did the Retina display matter?

The iPhone 4 introduced Apple’s “Retina display” branding. Apple described the screen as the highest-resolution phone display available at the time. Separately, iFixit’s teardown said its pixel density was four times that of the iPhone 3GS. These are distinct claims: Apple made the launch-era comparison about resolution, while iFixit gave the relative pixel-density figure. Apple’s announcement and iFixit’s teardown document them.

  • 4.7" Retina HD display, 12MP camera and 4K video at 30 fps / 7MP FaceTime HD camera with Retina Flash Black

The screen strengthened the design argument because the most noticeable improvement was not only the exterior. A high-density display made text and images appear sharper, giving the phone a major visual upgrade in everyday use. A later TIME retrospective identifies Retina display and build quality as aspects that remain central to Apple’s products. That supports the view that the iPhone 4 helped establish lasting priorities; it does not prove that it ranks first among Apple designs.

How did the exterior serve the engineering?

The stainless-steel band was also part of the antenna system, rather than simply a frame around the glass. Contemporary WIRED launch coverage described that antenna role. It is a revealing design choice: a prominent exterior element performed a technical function as well as shaping the phone’s appearance. The available sources establish that connection, but do not provide enough detail to make a full account of the antenna controversy or its reception.

What else changed with the iPhone 4?

Apple’s launch announcement listed FaceTime, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, HD video recording, the A4 processor and a 3-axis gyroscope among the phone’s features. Together, they show that the iPhone 4 was presented as more than a materials refresh: Apple paired the new exterior and screen with camera, video and interaction capabilities. Those features contribute to the model’s launch significance, though the design case rests most clearly on the materials, display and antenna integration.

Was the iPhone 4 more important than the original iPhone?

There is no objective ranking in the available evidence. The original iPhone established a new visible design language for Apple’s phone; the iPhone 4 made a different kind of statement by putting flat glass, steel and a dramatically denser display at the center of the experience. The iPhone 4’s case is strongest when “important” means influential in the look and priorities associated with Apple products afterward. The original’s case is strongest when the measure is the first major shift in what an Apple smartphone was.

  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs called the iPhone 4 “the biggest leap since the original iPhone” in the June 7, 2010 announcement. That is useful evidence of Apple’s own positioning at launch, not an independent verdict. The later TIME retrospective lends support to the iPhone 4’s enduring emphasis on display and build quality, but does not systematically compare its influence with every subsequent model.

What the iPhone 4’s legacy does—and does not—show

The iPhone 4 is a persuasive candidate for Apple’s most important smartphone design because its external form, materials and screen worked together rather than competing for attention. The steel band’s functional role makes the design especially legible as engineering, while the Retina display tied the phone’s visual identity to a lasting product priority. But “most important” remains an interpretation: the sources support a case for its significance, not a definitive ranking against the original iPhone or later models.
