When an iPhone video will not become a Telegram profile photo, the failure can happen at different stages: the video may be missing from the picker, its upload may stall, or the profile may show a still image instead of animation. Telegram documents animated profile pictures as square MPEG-4 videos, recommending 800×800 pixels and allowing dimensions up to 1080×1080. That makes a compatible export a useful test, but available documentation does not establish that HEVC is the cause of every iPhone upload problem.
What Telegram expects for an animated profile picture
Telegram’s API documentation describes animated profile pictures as square MPEG-4 videos. It recommends 800×800 pixels and lists 1080×1080 as the maximum dimensions: Telegram API: Profile photos. These are documented resolution and format details, not a published promise that every video meeting them will upload successfully.

Telegram also supports a video start timestamp for the profile photo. That timestamp selects the still preview frame, so the thumbnail can look static or unrepresentative even when the underlying profile video is animated.
The cited API section does not state a general maximum duration or file size. Do not treat an individual user’s successful upload of a small file as an official cap.

Why an iPhone video might not work
iPhones can record in HEVC/H.265, while Telegram’s API describes the avatar as MPEG-4. Apple also provides a Most Compatible camera setting that records new video in H.264. Those facts make a fresh H.264/MPEG-4 export a sensible compatibility test; they do not prove Telegram rejects HEVC or that codec mismatch explains every failure.
Telegram issue reports document two distinct iOS problems: a profile-photo picker that did not show videos, and a separate upload that remained in an endless loading animation. The picker report is marked Fixed and refers to Telegram iOS 12.2.4, so it shows that a client-side picker problem has occurred, not that it is the cause of a current failure. In the upload report, an administrator suggested encoding or bitrate might be involved; the reporter later said a video around 2 MB worked. That is one incident, not a universal size limit or guaranteed fix.
If Telegram does not show the video in the picker
- Check the stage: if you cannot select the video, this is a picker or media-access issue—not an upload that has failed.
- Check Photos access: in iOS Settings, find Telegram and verify it can access the relevant video in Photos. Exact labels can vary by iOS version.
- Refresh the app: close and reopen Telegram, then check for an available update and try selecting the video again.
These are practical checks, not documented guaranteed fixes for the older picker issue. If the video remains absent, try again after confirming that it appears and plays in the iPhone Photos app.

If the upload starts but hangs or fails
- Make a fresh copy: export a square H.264/MPEG-4 version at 800×800 pixels, then select that copy in Telegram. This is a diagnostic test derived from Apple’s format options and Telegram’s documented avatar specifications, not an official Telegram conversion recipe.
- Try a smaller export: reduce the export size if practical and retry. One user in a Telegram iOS issue thread reported success with a video around 2 MB, but Telegram’s cited API documentation does not establish that as a limit.
- Change one variable at a time: retry with the new format or smaller file separately where possible. If one succeeds, that narrows the likely cause for that file; it does not establish a rule for all Telegram uploads.
Apple explains that selecting Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible makes new captures use H.264 rather than HEVC. Apple’s instructions say, “All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format.” This affects new recordings; it does not automatically convert an existing video. Apple also documents exporting HEVC media to another format: Apple Support: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices.
If the profile video uploads but looks still
Check the preview frame Telegram is using. A static frame is expected for the profile-photo preview; Telegram’s API includes a video start timestamp to choose it. If that frame happens to show a moment with little movement, the preview may look still even though the profile video itself can animate.
A separate Telegram issue concerns an older Android client that converted an uploaded GIF profile video to a static JPG; its report suggested sending the GIF to Saved Messages to create an MP4 version and saving that MP4 for upload. That is a limited Android example, not evidence of current iPhone behavior.
Quick Recap
Quick diagnosis by symptom
| What happens | What to check or try |
|---|---|
| Video is missing from the picker | Verify Telegram’s access to the video in Photos, restart or update the app, and retry selection. |
| Video is selectable, but upload hangs | Try a fresh, smaller square H.264/MPEG-4 export at Telegram’s recommended 800×800 resolution. |
| Upload completes, but the preview looks static | Check whether the chosen preview frame is unrepresentative; Telegram supports selecting a video start timestamp for it. |
