Telegram channel comments are replies in a thread inside the channel’s linked discussion group. Telegram forwards each channel post into that group, and comments attach to the forwarded copy. The channel still shows the thread beneath the post, so the channel and group are two connected views of the conversation—not two separate comment areas.
Where Telegram post comments actually live
A channel is for broadcasting; its linked discussion supergroup provides the message thread used for comments. Telegram automatically forwards a channel post to that group. Replies to the forwarded message make up that post’s comment thread, which Telegram connects back to the original channel post.

Telegram’s API documentation describes a channel post’s comment section as “simply the message thread of the automatically forwarded channel message in the linked discussion supergroup.” It also distinguishes the linked group from the channel post: the post’s reply metadata identifies the discussion supergroup, while the forwarded group message carries the thread itself. Developers can retrieve the thread’s initial messages with messages.getDiscussionMessage.
Why you may see comments in the group but not under the post
The group is where the forwarded post and its replies are stored, and the channel presents that same thread as comments beneath the post. Telegram’s channel guide says comments appear in separate threads under posts and also in the discussion group, where admins can follow the conversation. So finding a post’s replies in the group is normal; it does not mean they belong to an unrelated conversation.

If there is no comment button, the channel may not have a discussion group linked. Telegram’s Channels FAQ says linking a discussion group enables subscribers to comment on channel posts.
What to check if commenting does not work
No comment button on any posts
- Open the channel’s info page and check whether a discussion group is linked. Telegram’s channel guide describes adding a discussion group from this page.
- If none is linked, connect a group to the channel. Without a linked discussion group, subscribers do not get the post comment button.
A particular user cannot comment
Check the discussion group’s join-to-send requirement. Telegram provides a setting that can require users to join the discussion group before they can send messages; if enabled, a user who has not joined may be unable to comment. The API method documenting this control is channels.toggleJoinToSend.

Replies reach a separate “Replies” chat
A commenter does not necessarily have to be a member of the discussion group to receive a reply. Telegram’s September 30, 2020 announcement said that replies to a person’s comments would be delivered through a special chat called Replies when that person was not a member of the group. That explains why a reply notification or conversation may appear outside the group itself.

A Telegram Bugs and Suggestions forum report dated July 14, 2024 described comments on a post with an inline keyboard appearing only through group membership rather than under the channel post. The official response indicated that behavior could change, so treat that report as a potentially outdated edge case—not as a rule for all posts. If the problem affects one post format but not others, check the linked group’s thread and the channel’s current display before concluding comments are unavailable.
