A Wi-Fi remote control uses a network to carry commands from an app or controller to an appliance or hub. The appliance does not necessarily have Wi-Fi: a compatible hub can receive a command over the network and retransmit it as infrared (IR) or another signal the appliance understands.
What “Wi-Fi remote control” means
The Federal Communications Commission defines Wi-Fi as a “wireless networking protocol based on Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standard 802.11” in its 2024 E-Rate order. In a remote-control setup, Wi-Fi is often the network link carrying an app command. It is not necessarily the signal that reaches the appliance.

The key distinction is between the connection that carries a command to a hub or appliance and the control technology the appliance accepts. A Wi-Fi remote may refer to several different arrangements:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Direct network control: The appliance connects to a network and accepts commands through its own app or a supported platform.
- App-to-hub-to-appliance control: The app sends a command over Wi-Fi or an internet service to a hub, which emits IR or another supported signal. TP-Link describes this arrangement for its Tapo Smart IoT & IR Hub.
- Smart-home system control: An app communicates with a hub that then reaches devices using a separate protocol. For example, Lutron’s Caséta system connects its hub to a router by Ethernet and uses Clear Connect to communicate wirelessly with Caséta devices.
How Wi-Fi-to-IR control works
With a compatible older appliance, the command path can be: tap a control in an app, send the command over the local network or an internet service to an IR hub, then have the hub emit an infrared signal toward the appliance. Tuya describes an infrared gateway that combines Wi-Fi and infrared for network control of IR appliances in its infrared gateway explanation.

This lets a phone control some appliances that have no Wi-Fi connection of their own. The hub is effectively translating between the app’s network command and the appliance’s existing remote-control signal. That translation only works when the hub supports the appliance’s signal and commands.
Which signal does the appliance use?
Wi-Fi, IR, Bluetooth and other radio-frequency (RF) control methods are not interchangeable. Wi-Fi may connect the app to a hub, while the hub uses a different method to control the appliance. An IR-only hub will not control a device that requires Bluetooth or unsupported RF. SwitchBot’s comparison of IR, Bluetooth and RF remotes describes the differences between those control technologies.

IR also needs a usable path to the appliance. It does not pass through walls, and obstacles can block the signal; the hub generally needs to face the appliance or use a compatible extender. Radio-based controls may not require the same pointing and line-of-sight arrangement, but the hub and device still need to use compatible protocols.

- Appliance connection: Find out whether the appliance accepts commands directly through a network app or needs a hub.
- Remote signal: Identify whether its remote uses IR, Bluetooth or RF. A hub must support the relevant technology.
- Exact model and commands: A brand appearing on a compatibility list does not guarantee that every model or button function works. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information or use its matching or learning procedure. TP-Link documents matching and testing commands for its hub.
- Placement: For IR, plan for the hub to face the appliance without walls or other obstacles in the way.
- Network and ecosystem: Check which app or platform is supported, whether integrations such as voice control or Matter are available for that model and region, and which features depend on them.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Some hubs support control over the home’s local network even when the external internet connection is down. TP-Link says its cited hub remains controllable from the Tapo app when the phone and hub are on the same local network. That is a capability of this example, not a guarantee for every Wi-Fi remote. Control while away from home may depend on an internet connection or cloud service. Check the product documentation for the model’s local and remote-access requirements.
