Why Telegram Lead Notifications Fail and How to Fix Them

Check whether the lead message is in Telegram first. Then follow the right fix: phone notification settings if it arrived, or bot polling and webhook diagnostics if it did not.

First check whether the lead message is actually present in the Telegram chat. If it is there but your phone did not alert you, troubleshoot Telegram and your device’s notification settings. If it is missing, investigate how the bot or lead integration delivers updates. These are separate failure points, so checking them in that order helps avoid changing server settings to fix a phone alert—or changing phone settings when the message was never delivered.

Is the lead message in the Telegram chat?

Open the conversation where the lead notification should appear and look for the message.

  • Message is present: Telegram received it. Focus on app, chat, and operating-system alert settings on the device where you expected to see the notification.
  • Message is absent: Check the bot or integration that sends the lead, including its connection to Telegram and its update-delivery mode.

This check separates the two troubleshooting paths; by itself, it does not identify the precise cause.

If the message is present but your phone did not alert you

Android

Telegram’s Android notification guidance recommends checking the app’s notification settings, the affected chat, and Android’s background and priority controls. Menu names and locations differ across Android versions and manufacturers, so look for the equivalent settings if the labels below do not match your phone.

  1. In Telegram, make sure notifications are enabled and the notification importance is set high.
  2. Open the specific conversation and check that it is not muted.
  3. Confirm that Google Play Services are installed.
  4. In Android’s system settings, review Telegram’s notification priority and confirm notifications are allowed.
  5. If your phone has battery-saving, task-killer, or background-app restrictions, allow Telegram to run in the background or exempt it from those restrictions.

Telegram specifically calls out Huawei and Xiaomi devices as examples where manufacturer background restrictions may interfere with notifications. The controls and their names vary by device.

iPhone and iPad

  1. In Telegram, confirm that notifications are enabled for the relevant chat or chat type.
  2. In iOS Settings, open Telegram’s notification settings and allow notifications.
  3. Check that the individual conversation is not muted and that Do Not Disturb is not preventing the alert.
  4. If those checks do not help, Telegram’s iOS troubleshooting guidance suggests closing Telegram and refreshing its alert-style settings.

If the message is missing: check how the bot receives updates

Telegram bots can receive updates in two ways: long polling, where the bot asks Telegram for updates using getUpdates, or an outgoing webhook, where Telegram sends updates to a configured endpoint using setWebhook. Telegram’s Bots FAQ explains that these modes are mutually exclusive: long polling cannot operate while a webhook is set. Before changing configuration, confirm which mode your integration is designed to use.

For a long-polling integration

  • Check that the integration is running and making successful getUpdates requests.
  • Verify that it processes updates and advances the offset to confirm which updates it has handled. If it does not advance correctly, updates may not be acknowledged as expected.
  • Check the integration’s logs around the time a lead should have arrived for request errors, stopped workers, or processing failures.

For a webhook integration

  1. Use Telegram’s getWebhookInfo method to inspect the configured URL, pending update count, and recent delivery-error information.
  2. Confirm that the endpoint is reachable by Telegram and that the webhook configuration and certificate meet the current Bot API requirements.
  3. Review the endpoint’s server logs for delivery attempts and errors at the time the lead was created.

Use Telegram’s current Bot API documentation for implementation requirements. Do not rely on old port or certificate instructions without checking that they still apply.

Use the pattern of failures to narrow the cause

  • One chat, one device: Check whether that conversation is muted and whether that device allows Telegram notifications.
  • Several Telegram chats on one device: Check app-wide notification permissions and device-level restrictions such as Do Not Disturb, battery saving, or background limits.
  • The lead is absent from the intended chat: Investigate the integration’s polling or webhook delivery and its server-side processing.
  • Several recipients do not receive the lead: Check the shared bot or integration before treating it as a problem with each person’s phone.
  • Alerts arrive only sometimes: Note whether the message itself is present each time. An intermittent alert with a message in chat points to a different layer than an intermittent absence of the message.

What to collect before asking for help

If the notification checks do not solve the problem, Telegram’s support guidance recommends recording whether alerts never arrive or are intermittent and providing relevant logs and the time an issue occurred, when available. For an integration failure, include the relevant polling or webhook errors and server-side details. Do not share bot tokens or lead recipients’ personal information in a public report.

For Telegram app support, the FAQ directs users to Settings → Ask a Question for volunteer support. For a business integration, contact the person or service responsible for the bot with the time of the missing message and the relevant error details.

Telegram’s guidance behind these checks

Telegram’s Telegram FAQ: Notification problems and its Android and iOS troubleshooting pages cover device-side notification checks, including muted chats and platform-specific restrictions. The Bots FAQ and Telegram Bot API explain update retrieval, polling offsets, webhook status, and delivery errors. The Telegram Support Force notification manual describes what to gather when problems continue. Settings and API requirements can change, and device menus vary by OS version and manufacturer.
