Why Switch Emulation Runs Slowly on Steam Deck—and How to Improve It

Switch emulation is often CPU-limited on Steam Deck. Learn how to distinguish shader stutter from low performance and which troubleshooting steps are worth trying.

Switch emulation can run slowly on Steam Deck because the emulator must translate the Switch’s hardware instructions for the Deck, and that work is usually limited by the CPU. Updating software, choosing the appropriate graphics backend, and letting caches build can help; lowering resolution only helps when the GPU is the bottleneck. A demanding game may still fall short of its intended speed.

Why Switch emulation is demanding

A Switch emulator does more than display a game. It recreates console behavior while translating the Switch’s ARM instructions into code the Deck’s x86 processor can execute. Ryubing’s documentation describes this translation and says its CPU emulator supports much of ARMv8. The project says emulation is CPU-bottlenecked in the vast majority of cases, so the Deck can struggle even when the game’s rendered image is not especially demanding. Ryubing Docs

That distinction matters when choosing a fix: lower resolution reduces graphics work, but it does not remove the CPU’s instruction-translation workload. The game, emulator build, settings, and graphics backend all affect the result, so there is no reliable FPS figure or single setting that applies to every title.

Identify the kind of slowdown

Consistently low speed or frame rate

If performance is poor throughout play, the game may be asking more of the emulator’s CPU work than the Deck can sustain. Ryubing describes the CPU as the limiting component in most cases. Lowering resolution is worth testing only if GPU load is actually the constraint; it is not a universal FPS fix. Ryubing Setup & Configuration Guide

Brief hitches when effects appear

A pause or stutter when a visual effect first appears can be shader compilation: the emulator needs to compile a shader for the host graphics system. Ryubing’s shader cache saves compiled shaders so they can be reused, which can reduce repeated stutter on later encounters or play sessions. The first encounter may still hitch, and caching does not guarantee a higher sustained frame rate. Ryubing Setup & Configuration Guide

Slow loading on early launches

Ryubing enables Profiled Persistent Translation Cache (PPTC) by default. It stores translated functions to reduce loading time; according to the project guide, the benefit becomes available from the third launch after the game has reached its title screen at least twice. This is a load-time improvement, not evidence that gameplay frame rate will increase. Ryubing Docs

What to try, in order

  1. Update the emulator and graphics drivers. Ryubing lists both as initial troubleshooting steps for slow games. This is a sensible baseline check, not a promise that an intensive title will reach full speed. Ryubing Setup & Configuration Guide
  2. Check the graphics backend. Ryubing recommends Vulkan for AMD and Intel graphics users rather than OpenGL. Confirm that the emulator build and SteamOS setup you are using expose this option; a backend change is not a guaranteed improvement in every game. Ryubing Setup & Configuration Guide
  3. Allow caches to do their work. Shader caching is enabled by default, and PPTC is enabled by default. Replaying areas can let already-compiled shaders be reused; repeated launches can also bring PPTC’s documented load-time benefit. Neither feature promises to eliminate every hitch or raise sustained FPS. Ryubing Setup & Configuration Guide
  4. Test a lower resolution only if the GPU appears to be limiting performance. If the slowdown is CPU-bound, reducing rendered resolution may make little difference. Treat it as a diagnostic adjustment rather than a standard fix. Ryubing Setup & Configuration Guide
  5. Leave other settings at their defaults unless there is reliable, game-specific guidance. Ryubing says its setup is pre-optimized and advises against changing settings its guide does not discuss unless staff directs it. Avoid applying fixed TDP, GPU-clock, CPU-thread, or power-tool values as universal solutions. Ryubing Setup & Configuration Guide
  6. Check the specific game and emulator configuration. EmuDeck supports selecting Ryujinx or Yuzu per game, but its documentation does not establish that either emulator is universally faster on Steam Deck. A meaningful comparison needs the game, emulator build, game version, and settings to be specified. EmuDeck: Ryujinx on SteamOS

Why uncapping frame rate can make a game worse

Many Switch games tie physics and game speed to frame rate, according to Ryubing’s troubleshooting documentation. An uncapped frame rate or high-FPS mod can therefore make a game run faster, not simply smoother. A fixed high-FPS target can also produce slow motion when the system cannot maintain it. Use such a modification only when it is intended for the specific game and mod version, and when the Deck can sustain the target. Ryubing FAQ & Troubleshooting

ROM location and setup are not performance fixes

EmuDeck documents Switch games in Emulation/roms/switch; the Emulation directory may be on the Deck’s internal SSD or an SD card. Its instructions also cover Ryujinx keys and installing firmware through the emulator’s GUI. These are setup details, not evidence that moving a game to an SD card or buying more storage will make emulation faster. EmuDeck documents updating Ryujinx through EmuDeck or the application’s update mechanisms and choosing an emulator per game. Because emulator availability and maintenance can change, consult current project and package sources rather than assuming a particular build or fork remains current. EmuDeck: Ryujinx on SteamOS

Should you enable asynchronous shader compilation?

Ryubing’s FAQ says asynchronous shader compilation can introduce graphical glitches and does not eliminate stutter. It also says the project’s developers do not plan to implement it in the main project, though outside contributions may be reviewed. That describes the project documentation, not a guarantee about every build or future development. Ryubing FAQ & Troubleshooting

When basic troubleshooting does not help

If the problem appears to be broader system instability rather than one game’s emulation performance, Steam Support’s software troubleshooting guide recommends installing available system updates and restarting the Deck; it applies to LCD and OLED models.
