How to Choose a Red Dot Sight Reticle and Brightness Setting

Balance reticle visibility against target coverage, set brightness just high enough to see clearly, and verify model-specific controls—especially for night vision.

Choose a red dot by balancing how easily you can see its reticle against how much of the target it covers. Set brightness to the lowest level that remains clearly visible in the current light, then adjust as conditions change. No single MOA size, reticle pattern, or brightness number is best for everyone; the right choice depends on the optic, intended use, and what you can see clearly.

How to choose a dot size

MOA describes an angle: at a given distance, a larger-MOA dot covers more of the target than a smaller one. In practice, compare two things: whether the dot is easy for you to pick up, and whether its apparent size obscures detail you need to see. Your intended use and the distance and conditions in which you expect to use the sight affect that balance.

Manufacturer examples show the range, not a universal ranking. Trijicon lists a 1.0 MOA option as the smallest dot in its cited RMR Type 2 Adjustable LED configuration, Aimpoint’s DUTY RDS has a 2 MOA dot, and Leupold’s DeltaPoint Pro NV has a 2.5 MOA dot. SIG Sauer describes 6 MOA as the most popular size for a pistol-mounted red dot in its comparison article; that is the manufacturer’s popularity claim, not an independently verified market statistic.

These product specifications do not show that one size performs better for every user. If you can compare candidate optics in person, look at the reticle against a representative target and choose a size you can acquire clearly without losing more target detail than you want.

Dot-only or circle-dot?

This is a preference and feature choice, not a settled contest between a universally superior reticle and an inferior one. A dot-only pattern gives you a single aiming point. A multi-pattern sight may let you select a dot, a circle, or both.

For example, the Osight SE manual describes a selectable 2 MOA dot with a 32 MOA circle, as well as dot-only and circle-only choices. Those specifications show what one multi-pattern optic offers; they do not establish that a circle is faster or better for all users. Check whether the exact model lets you switch patterns and whether you prefer the appearance of each option.

How bright should the dot be?

Use the lowest brightness that keeps the reticle clearly visible in the light where you are using the sight. Reassess when you move between bright sun, shade, indoor spaces, and low light rather than relying on one fixed setting. A dot set brighter than necessary may look larger or less crisp to some people; SIG Sauer advises checking brightness when a dot appears irregular.

Brightness numbers are specific to each optic. For example, the Osight SE manual assigns levels 1–2 to night vision and 3–10 to daylight. Aimpoint lists four night-vision-compatible and six daylight settings for the DUTY RDS. Do not assume that the same numbered level produces the same brightness across brands or models.

What to check for night-vision use

Confirm that the exact optic and the night-vision device are compatible, then follow both manufacturers’ instructions. “NV compatible” does not mean the settings are interchangeable between sights, or that every setting is suitable for every paired device.

The control schemes vary by model: the Trijicon RMR Type 2 Adjustable LED lists eight brightness settings, two of them NV-compatible; Aimpoint lists four NV-compatible and six daylight settings on the DUTY RDS; and Leupold describes ten settings on the DeltaPoint Pro NV, including two intended to match night-vision-device sensitivity. These are model-specific features, so consult the instructions for the precise configuration you own or are considering.

What if the dot looks like a starburst?

An irregular-looking reticle can have more than one explanation. SIG Sauer’s FAQ says, “If the red dot on your sight does not look perfectly round or replicates a starburst, the distortion may be the way your eye perceives the dot.” It identifies astigmatism as one possible cause, not a certainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SIG Sauer suggests looking through the other eye, checking whether brightness is too high for the ambient light, and photographing the dot with a phone or digital camera for comparison. If the photographed dot looks round while your view does not, that may indicate some degree of astigmatism; it is not an eye diagnosis. If the distortion persists, consider corrective lenses and professional eye care.

Compare the whole optic, not just the MOA number

Before choosing between specific sights, compare the features that affect your use:

  • Dot size: How visible it is to you and how much target detail it covers.
  • Reticle patterns: Whether you want a dot-only sight or selectable dot, circle, or combined patterns.
  • Brightness control: Whether adjustment is manual or automatic, if the model offers that choice, and whether its daylight range suits your conditions.
  • Night-vision settings: Compatibility with your device and the intended role of the optic’s NV settings.
  • Personal clarity: Whether the reticle looks clear to your eye at usable brightness levels.
  • Fit and instructions: Whether the exact model matches your platform and mounting footprint, and what its manual specifies.

Specifications establish what a product offers, but they do not establish a universal performance winner. Product configurations can differ within a model family, so verify the exact version rather than relying on a similar product name.
