SwiftUI widget animations respond to content updates; they are not persistent loops. WidgetKit renders widgets separately from your app and decides when to present timeline updates, so a view cannot keep animating just because it remains onscreen. To diagnose a stopped or reset animation, check whether the data changed, whether the animation is attached to that change, whether the provider can read the latest state, and whether WidgetKit or the display mode affects presentation.
Why widget animations stop
WidgetKit archives and renders widget views in a separate process. Your extension does not stay continuously active while the widget is visible. Instead, the system presents snapshots derived from timeline entries and may animate a transition when the content updates. Apple describes widget animations as responses to data updates and sets a maximum animation duration of two seconds for widgets and Live Activities (Apple: Animating data updates in widgets and Live Activities).

That makes a widget different from a foreground app view: a repeating SwiftUI animation is not a reliable way to create motion that runs indefinitely. Design the widget to communicate a change when a new state is presented.
Fix the animation trigger and view identity
Attach animation to the value that changes
Use .animation(_:value:) with the value whose change should trigger the animation. If the modifier watches a value that stays constant while another value changes, the expected transition may not occur. For numeric text, consider .contentTransition(.numericText()).

Animate replacement of a model-driven view
When a larger view should transition as its model changes, one option is to make the model Hashable when appropriate, attach it using .id(model), and provide a transition such as .push(from:). Confirm that the model actually changes between the snapshots being displayed. Apple documents these animation techniques in its widget animation guidance.
Fix resets after a timeline refresh
Think of each timeline entry as a complete snapshot, not as the next frame of a continuously running view. Include the values needed to render the intended state in the entry, and store shared app data somewhere both the app and extension can read. If a later entry contains an old or default value, WidgetKit can render that state and make the widget appear to reset.

Choose timeline entries for the update pattern
For predictable changes, provide future timeline entries. Choose after(_:) or atEnd based on when the provider expects to have more data. The timeline policy specifies the earliest date WidgetKit requests another timeline; it does not promise that the visible widget changes at that exact time. Apple explicitly notes that WidgetKit may not update a widget view exactly at an entry’s date (Apple: Timeline).
Reload after app data changes
When app state changes outside a scheduled entry, ask WidgetKit to reload the relevant timeline. Use WidgetCenter.shared.reloadTimelines(ofKind:) for the affected widget kind; use reloadAllTimelines() when the change applies across widget kinds. The provider must then read the persisted current state and build the next entry. Apple documents these reload APIs in its WidgetKit documentation.

Fix buttons or toggles that appear to undo themselves
For a widget interaction handled by an App Intent, persist the changed value before perform() returns. Apple says the system reloads the widget timeline after the action; the provider reads the saved value to create the next snapshot (Apple: Making a widget interactive). If the intent returns before the write completes, the provider may see the old state and render it again.
Handle save or load failures explicitly. If fresh data cannot be obtained, render a useful stale-data or error state instead of silently substituting a default that looks like a successful reversal.

Account for scheduling and presentation conditions
Widget refreshes are not an animation clock
WidgetKit controls update timing and can defer presentation beyond an entry’s requested date. Apple says a frequently viewed widget typically has a daily budget of 40–70 refreshes, roughly corresponding to intervals of 15–60 minutes; actual scheduling varies with factors such as user behavior, location changes, and update coalescing (Apple: Keeping a widget up to date). These are typical figures, not a guaranteed cadence or a real-time timer. Prefer informative snapshots and timeline entries that tolerate delay over frame-by-frame motion or exact-time callbacks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck Always-On display and OS support
On devices with an Always-On display, Apple says animations are suppressed while Always-On is active. Check isLuminanceReduced if the animation is absent only in that presentation context. Apple also notes that older operating-system versions do not animate widgets, but the cited guidance does not establish an exact minimum release. Check the availability annotations for the APIs you use against your deployment target rather than assuming a version threshold (Apple: Animating data updates in widgets and Live Activities).

Choose the right fix for the cause
| Situation | What to verify | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Predictable content change | Does the provider know the upcoming value and when it is expected? | Supply future timeline entries and a policy suited to the update schedule. |
| App changes data unexpectedly | Is the new value persisted where the extension can read it? | Persist the state, then request a targeted timeline reload or reload all timelines when appropriate. |
| Widget button or toggle changes state | Does the App Intent finish saving before perform() returns? |
Complete the write first; let the subsequent provider read that saved state. |
| Content updates but does not animate | Is the animation tied to the value that changed, and is the view identity appropriate? | Use .animation(_:value:), a suitable content transition, or model-based identity and transition. |
| Animation is missing only on a device or in a display mode | Is the OS version supported, or is Always-On active? | Check API availability and isLuminanceReduced. |
