A failed subscription renewal is a signal to diagnose the payment—not a reason to keep charging the same card. Check the processor’s decline reason first: a temporary issue may justify a limited retry, while an expired card, required authentication, suspected fraud, or a technical error calls for a different fix.
Why did my subscription payment fail?
Payment failures generally fall into three groups: an issuer declines the charge, a payment system blocks it, or the payment request contains an invalid API call. The useful clue is the processor’s actual response, not just the fact that a renewal did not go through. Stripe explains the main decline categories.

- Insufficient funds: The issuer may decline a charge when the account does not have enough available funds. Stripe attributed 36%–39% of subscription payment failures to insufficient funds in its own 2023 data. That is a share of the failures Stripe analyzed, not the percentage of all subscription attempts that fail or an industry-wide rate. Stripe’s 2023 figures should be read in that context.
- Issuer decision: A bank may reject the payment for suspected fraud or another reason. A generic response such as “do not honour” may not reveal the bank’s underlying reason to the merchant.
- Outdated or incorrect details: An expired card, replaced card number, or incorrect payment information can prevent a charge from being authorized.
- Fraud or risk block: The processor or issuer may stop a payment as a protective measure. Repeating a charge that was blocked for suspected fraud is not a sound recovery strategy.
- Authentication required: Some payments need the customer to complete an authentication step, such as 3D Secure, before they can succeed.
- Technical or integration issue: A malformed API request or other payment-system error needs investigation and correction; trying the same request repeatedly may not help.
How to find the reason for a failed renewal
- Open the invoice or payment record in the billing dashboard and note the processor’s message and decline code, if available.
- Check the related event or logs to see whether the issuer declined the payment, a risk control blocked it, or the request failed technically. Stripe’s Smart Retries guidance describes payment-failure information and recovery controls in its Billing system.
- Choose the remedy that matches the response. Consider a later retry for a potentially temporary decline; ask the customer to update their details if the credentials are stale; provide an authentication route if required; contact the issuer when the response does not explain the decline; and fix an API or integration error before submitting again.
Do not infer a specific cause from a vague issuer message. If the processor does not expose the bank’s reason, the customer may need to ask their bank.
How do I fix a failed subscription payment?
Retry only when another attempt could help
A later attempt may work after a temporary issue, including insufficient funds. The appropriate timing depends on the failure and the customer’s circumstances; there is no single retry interval established here for every business. Stripe’s Kiran Chandran, a Billing engineer, wrote on January 23, 2024: “If a subscription payment fails, sometimes it makes sense to retry it almost immediately, such as in the case of a technical payment failure.” That is a Stripe engineering perspective about a specific kind of failure, not a recommendation to retry every decline immediately. - With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.

- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
Use the billing provider’s retry controls or compare schedules against your own recovery results. Set a maximum number of attempts and a final attempt date, and check current processor and card-network guidance: networks restrict excessive retries, and the applicable rules can vary.
Ask the customer to update the payment method
If the card is expired, replaced, or entered incorrectly, another charge with the same details may fail again. Send a clear notice that identifies the invoice and amount, and link to a secure way to update the payment method. Avoid asking customers to send card details by email or in an unsecured message.

Some billing systems can use card account updater services or network tokens to keep certain stored credentials current. These tools can address some replaced or expired card details, but they do not guarantee that every failure will be resolved without customer involvement. Stripe says updater support is widespread in the United States and varies internationally; availability depends on issuer participation. See Stripe’s automatic card updates information.

When a payment requires 3D Secure authentication, the customer needs a way to confirm it rather than another unattended attempt. Stripe says subscription payments that fail because of 3D Secure authentication are not automatically retried under its retry settings. Its guidance describes using a customer confirmation link in applicable cases. See Stripe’s retry and recovery guidance.

Correct technical errors before charging again
If the payment record points to an invalid API call or integration problem, review the request and error details, correct the underlying issue, and then make an appropriate attempt. A retry can be useful for a transient technical failure, but it will not repair a consistently invalid request.
What should happen after the last retry?
Set a clear policy for invoices that remain unpaid after the permitted attempts. Depending on the billing system and settings, the invoice may stay unpaid and the subscription may be cancelled or otherwise restricted. Stripe notes that retries can extend beyond a billing period, causing attempts on different invoices to overlap; an exhausted invoice can lead to cancellation or unpaid status depending on configuration. Review the current Stripe behavior and settings.

Define how many attempts are allowed, when the retry window ends, and what access or subscription state follows. Decide deliberately how to handle unresolved invoices so that retry schedules do not create confusing or overlapping collections.
How to reduce repeat failures
- Make failure notices actionable: Include the invoice context, the amount, and a secure link to update payment details or complete authentication when needed. Stripe documents failed-payment emails and customer confirmation links for relevant cases. See Stripe’s automatic collection guidance.
- Keep credentials current where possible: Review whether your provider supports account updater services or network tokens for the cards and countries your customers use.
- Measure recovery by cause: Track initial failures, recoveries after retries, customer updates, later cancellations, and repeat failures. Stripe offers recovery analytics and downloadable reporting within its Billing ecosystem. See Stripe’s revenue recovery overview.
- Review the policy as outcomes change: Update retry schedules, notices, and subscription-state rules using your own results and current processor guidance.
