How to Prevent Lag and Rubber-Banding on a Game Server

Rubber-banding has several possible causes, so there is no single setting that fixes it for every game. First ask: Does it happen on every server, or only on one server or region? Then compare what you see with other players’ reports, in-game ping and packet indicators, frame rate, and any server-performance indicators the game provides. The pattern can help distinguish a local connection or device issue from a route or server problem.

What causes lag and rubber-banding?

Rubber-banding is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A game client may appear to jump backward or snap into a different position when updates arrive late, arrive unevenly, or fail to arrive. But local frame drops and a server that cannot keep up can produce similar-looking interruptions.

“Lag” is broader than ping. Bungie Help defines it as “a noticeable delay between the action of players and the reaction of the server.” Bungie’s network troubleshooting guide treats latency and packet loss as distinct problems. Steam’s Source 2 telemetry guide also describes jitter—the variation in packet arrival timing—and tick misses. A packet that arrives too late to be useful can disrupt play even if it was not technically lost.

  • Ping or latency: how long it takes for data to travel between your game and the server.
  • Jitter: how much packet arrival timing varies.
  • Packet loss: updates that fail to arrive.
  • Client performance: frame-rate drops or device load that interrupt what you see.
  • Server performance: a host or game server that struggles to process updates on time.

These causes can overlap. A low average ping does not rule out jitter or loss, and a smooth network reading does not rule out a client or server performance problem.

How to identify which layer is responsible

Start by recording the game, server or region, time, and what happened. Note whether teammates or opponents also report the problem, and check the in-game indicators available to you: ping, packet loss, jitter, missed ticks, frame rate, or server status. Not every game exposes every measurement.

  • Only one server or region is affected: that server, its route, or regional congestion becomes more plausible, especially if other players see the same issue. This is a clue, not proof.
  • The problem follows you across servers: check your device, Wi-Fi or wired connection, and local network workload first.
  • Network indicators look steady while frame rate falls: investigate client performance, background applications, and game load.
  • Several players see interruptions together: report the time and server to the game operator; a shared server or route issue is more plausible than a problem on one player’s device.

Use the game’s own support tools where available. For example, Klei’s Don’t Starve Together connection troubleshooting covers host performance as well as network causes.

How to troubleshoot a player-side connection

1. Compare idle and in-game conditions

Test the connection while the problem is happening, not just when the network is idle. Stop large downloads, uploads, streams, and unnecessary background traffic temporarily, then compare. Upload activity can be disruptive on some home connections, and other devices competing for bandwidth can contribute to congestion. Epic recommends testing under load because an idle result can look healthy even when a connection struggles during play.

  • Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.

A basic ping test is not a complete test of the game’s route or traffic. Epic notes that its ping test uses ICMP, whereas Fortnite gameplay uses UDP; a normal ICMP result therefore does not exclude a problem on the gameplay path. Follow the game’s support guidance for any available in-game network test.

2. Test Ethernet if you are using Wi-Fi

If practical, connect the gaming device to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same test. This helps determine whether Wi-Fi strength or stability is contributing to latency or packet loss. Klei recommends bypassing wireless for a wired test, while noting that Ethernet does not eliminate every possible network problem.

If you need a cable to make that comparison, an Ethernet cable for gaming is an optional diagnostic purchase, not a general cure. It can help bypass a problematic Wi-Fi segment only if the rest of the connection path is working properly.

3. Check the router and competing traffic

Try a better router placement if the device must stay on Wi-Fi, and check whether router firmware is current. If your router already offers QoS or a gaming mode, you can compare performance with the feature enabled; labels and behavior vary by router, and these settings help only when they address the actual bottleneck. Epic suggests considering QoS or gaming mode, along with placement and firmware, but does not promise a particular reduction in ping.

How to compare servers, regions, and routes

If the game allows it, compare a nearby region or another server while keeping your device and network conditions the same. Distance, congestion, routing, and matchmaking can all affect latency. Treat a region preference as a test rather than an automatic fix: it may lengthen queues or change match quality.

If connection tests remain poor across multiple game servers, contact your ISP with the endpoint tested, the time, and the results. If the issue appears limited to one game service or region, send those details to the game’s support team instead. A player can reduce local congestion or choose a different available server, but cannot directly repair an ISP route or overloaded game service.

How to read game telemetry and performance indicators

Use the measurements the game actually provides, and interpret them together. Ping shows one aspect of delay; jitter and packet loss can explain interruptions that average ping misses. Steam’s Source 2 telemetry guide describes ping, jitter, packet loss, and tick miss rate. It notes that increasing buffering can smooth over some loss or jitter, but the trade-off is added latency. Buffering is therefore a game-specific setting to test only when that game provides it—not a universal fix.

Some useful numbers are specific to their games, not general standards:

  • Epic Games Support identifies 0% packet loss as the target for Fortnite and says consistent loss above about 1% can cause in-game problems even when average ping is low. These are Fortnite support guidelines; the page does not show a publication date.
  • Klei recommends a server-list ping of 150 ms or below for optimal network performance in Don’t Starve Together. Klei’s guidance was updated July 21, 2026; that threshold is not universal.
  • Steam’s telemetry explanation gives Counter-Strike 2 as a 64-tick-per-second example and Deadlock as a 60-tick-per-second example. Those figures describe those games, not an ideal tick rate for every server.

When network readings are stable but frame rate or server performance worsens, look beyond the connection. In Don’t Starve Together, Klei recommends checking host performance and background applications and isolating mods one at a time. Those are game-specific troubleshooting examples; other games may have different tools and settings.

What server operators and game developers should check

Player-side ping alone is not enough to diagnose a server-side problem. Operators should compare network conditions with server workload and tick or update timing at the times players report lag. A server may have a performance issue even when a player’s local connection appears healthy.

For developers building connection-quality tests, Microsoft’s GDK QoS guidance, last updated April 28, 2025, says measurements should use the same channel and protocol as gameplay. It also notes that bandwidth tests can affect local link quality, so test design itself matters.

For Steamworks developers, Valve’s Steam Datagram Relay documentation describes relaying traffic for dedicated servers. Valve says the system may find a faster route for some players and can hide server and player IP addresses. It is a platform-specific architectural option, not a guaranteed cure for rubber-banding.
