Stink bugs release a defensive secretion when disturbed or crushed. If one has left an odor indoors, remove the insect and visible residue gently; there is no well-established, stink-bug-specific method for deodorizing indoor surfaces or fabrics. The odor usually fades quickly, according to University of Maryland Extension, but the source gives no dependable time estimate.
Why do stink bugs smell when crushed?
The smell is a defense: when alarmed, a stink bug releases secretion from scent glands. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says, “When disturbed or squashed, the stink bugs release an unpleasant odor from scent glands on their abdomen.” A peer-reviewed study describes glands on the ventral thorax and dorsal abdomen, so their location should not be reduced to a single site.

For the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys), a 2016 study identifies trans-2-octenal and trans-2-decenal as the major alarm aldehydes responsible for its scent. This chemical description is specific to that species; stink bugs are not all necessarily characterized by the same odor compounds. Read the 2016 study.

If the bug is still intact, avoid crushing it. For an individual bug, University of Maryland Extension recommends sweeping it into a straight-sided container with water and liquid detergent or soap. The soapy water is for collecting the insect, not a proven treatment for an odor already deposited on a surface. See the University of Maryland Extension guidance.

Vacuuming is another way to collect bugs, but the vacuum or its bag may smell afterward. Maryland Extension describes the odor as temporary; neither it nor EPA gives a reliable duration. To keep insects from reaching the canister or bag, Maryland Extension describes securing a stocking around the vacuum tube to intercept them. EPA notes that vacuuming can remove live or dead bugs indoors, while warning that the machine may take on their odor for a period of time. What to do if one has already been crushed indoors
Pick up the insect and visible residue carefully, avoiding smearing it over a larger area. For a counter, wall, upholstery, or clothing, follow the material’s usual care instructions and test a cleaning method on an inconspicuous spot when appropriate. This is cautious housekeeping, not a tested stink-bug odor-removal protocol.

Available extension and government guidance does not establish a reliable indoor deodorizing product or procedure for stink-bug residue on household surfaces or textiles. It therefore does not support promising that vinegar, baking soda, bleach, essential oils, air fresheners, or commercial odor sprays will neutralize the smell. University of Maryland Extension says the odor usually goes away quickly, but does not specify how many minutes or hours.
Exterior walls are a separate case
If stink bugs are gathered on outside walls, an Ask Extension expert recommends washing the exterior with soapy water to remove scent trails that may attract more bugs. That practical advice concerns exterior scent trails; it is not evidence that soap deodorizes an indoor spill or fabric. Read the Ask Extension response.

How to reduce future entry
Exclusion addresses how bugs get inside, not odor already present. EPA recommends caulking windows, weather-stripping exterior doors, sealing foundation cracks, securing crawlspace entries, and screening chimneys. Maryland Extension also recommends finding and sealing openings and repairing damaged screens. See EPA’s brown marmorated stink bug guidance and Maryland Extension’s recommendations.
Pesticides are not an odor-cleanup method. Maryland Extension says pesticides are generally ineffective and not recommended for controlling this pest inside or outside the home. EPA notes that labeled indoor aerosols or foggers may kill bugs in living areas, but do not prevent more from emerging through cracks and are not a long-term management solution.

Are stink bugs dangerous to people or pets?
EPA says brown marmorated stink bugs do not bite people or pets, are not known to transmit disease or cause physical harm, and do not damage buildings. It also notes that some people may be sensitive to allergens given off by the bugs. This safety information is specific to the EPA’s brown marmorated stink bug guidance; it should not be stretched into a claim that every species or every person’s reaction is identical. EPA’s guidance provides the qualification.
