The steps are similar in Windows 10 and Windows 11, but driver compatibility is model-specific.
Check whether your PC already has Wi-Fi
A desktop or laptop may already have a working wireless adapter, so check before adding another one. Open Start, search for Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and look for an entry with “wireless” or “Wi-Fi” in its name. Microsoft explains that a wireless network adapter is the hardware that connects a device to a wireless network: Setting up a wireless network in Windows.

If the built-in adapter is present and working, you may not need a USB adapter. If you are installing one because the built-in Wi-Fi is faulty, confirm which adapter you intend to use before changing or removing drivers.
Install the adapter in Windows
1. Connect the USB adapter
Insert the adapter into a USB port and give Windows time to detect it. Windows may find and install a driver automatically, but this depends on the adapter and the PC’s access to Windows Update. For example, Plugable describes Windows Update installation for its USB-WIFINT when the PC is already online, while NETGEAR recommends its official software or standalone driver for the NETGEAR models covered by its instructions. These are brand- and model-specific examples, not a guarantee for every adapter.

2. Find the exact model’s driver if needed
- Check the adapter’s label, packaging, or product listing for its exact model and hardware revision.
- On an internet-connected PC, open that manufacturer’s official support or download page. Select a driver that explicitly supports your Windows version and the adapter revision.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the downloaded package. Some packages use an installer; others provide a standalone driver. For example, NETGEAR’s instructions describe extracting its ZIP and running the Windows installer or standalone-driver executable. Plugable’s USB-WIFINT instructions describe extracting the package, running
setup.exeas an administrator, and restarting. Do not apply those product-specific steps to a different adapter.
For Windows 11, check the adapter maker’s current compatibility information rather than assuming that a driver for another model will work. TP-Link, for example, maintains a list of its products tested for Windows 11 and says most of its wireless adapters use the Windows 10 x64 driver on Windows 11. That guidance applies to TP-Link products covered by its page, not to adapters from other manufacturers: TP-Link Network Adapter Drivers for Windows 11.
3. If the PC is offline, transfer the driver
Download the exact driver package on another connected device and copy it to a USB flash drive. At the Windows setup stage, Microsoft’s instructions for an INF-based driver require the .inf file to be at the root of the flash drive, not in a subfolder. In that setup context, open Command Prompt with Shift + F10, use DiskPart’s list volume command to identify the USB drive letter, then run the following commands, substituting the actual drive letter for D::

pnputil /add-driver D:*.inf
pnputil /scan-devicesMicrosoft notes that scanning for devices may be needed. This PnPUtil route is for INF-based drivers in the Windows setup scenario; from the Windows desktop, use the manufacturer’s installer as directed. If the downloaded package is an executable, Microsoft says it may need to be opened to install the driver. See Get connected when setting up your Windows device.

Once the driver is installed, open the Wi-Fi network list in Windows, select your network, and enter its password. Then check Device Manager > Network adapters to confirm the USB adapter appears. A successful driver installation makes the device available to Windows, but it does not by itself guarantee a connection: the network, password, supported Wi-Fi band, and security mode still matter.

Microsoft recommends WPA3 security when both the router and PC support it. If one does not, use a security mode they both support. Microsoft’s wireless setup guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; continued use of Windows 10 should not be mistaken for ongoing free security support.

The adapter is missing from Device Manager
- Check that it is firmly connected, then look again under Network adapters.
- Install the driver from the manufacturer’s official page, verifying the exact model, hardware revision, and Windows version.
- If you have a driver installer waiting on another device, transfer it by USB. Use the INF/PnPUtil instructions only in the Windows setup situation described above.

The adapter appears, but no networks appear
In Device Manager, check whether the adapter is enabled and whether its driver has an issue. Confirm the driver is for the correct model and Windows version. Also check that the adapter supports the network’s band and security mode. If the manufacturer’s instructions require a restart after installation, restart before troubleshooting further.

The network appears, but the PC will not connect
Check that you selected the intended network and entered its current password. Confirm that the adapter supports the router’s Wi-Fi band and security settings. If the driver was recently changed, follow the adapter maker’s recovery instructions; Microsoft advises keeping a backup driver available before uninstalling a network driver. After a restart, Windows may find and install a driver again, but use the saved manufacturer driver if it does not.
