If brown marmorated stink bugs are gathering on your home or turning up indoors, they are usually looking for a sheltered place to spend winter—not food, or a place to breed. The most reliable fix is to block their entry points before fall. Here’s why stink bugs move into your house, how to keep them out, and what to do about the ones already inside.
Why are stink bugs moving into your house?
Brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) are outdoor plant-feeding insects. As days cool in late summer and fall, adults seek protected places to overwinter. Buildings offer narrow, sheltered spaces, so bugs may gather on sunlit exterior walls before slipping through gaps around windows, doors, siding, vents, pipes, or other openings. They can then settle in wall voids, attics, and similar protected areas.

For BMSB, an indoor sighting is generally a nuisance, not a sign that the insects are eating your house or reproducing in it. They do not damage structures or breed indoors, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and university extension guidance. The common name “stink bug” can refer to other species, however; if you are unsure what you found, ask your local extension service to help identify it.
How to stop stink bugs from getting in
Physical exclusion—closing the openings bugs use—is the main household defense. Inspect the exterior before the fall congregation begins, then choose the fix that matches each gap.

Walk around the whole building rather than checking only the windows where you have seen bugs. The EPA’s exclusion guidance and Maryland Extension’s recommendations cover common entry points and sealing measures.
When to seal gaps
Timing matters if bugs have already entered. NC State Extension advises against sealing the home in fall, winter, or early spring, when overwintering stink bugs may be trapped inside. Its guidance is to allow spring emergence, then seal before the late-August return attempt. That timing is regional; consult your local extension service if seasonal conditions in your area differ.

What to do about stink bugs already inside
Capture or remove indoor bugs without crushing them: crushing can release the odor that gives them their name. Options include dropping one into an empty jar or bottle and freezing it, or drowning it in soapy water where appropriate. You can also sweep it up or vacuum it. A vacuum may retain odor in its hose, bag, or collection container, so consider using a dedicated hand vacuum or a container you can clean or freeze afterward.

NC State Extension notes that releasing captured bugs outdoors is not a dependable solution because they may return indoors. If several appear, keep removing those you find while following the seasonal sealing guidance rather than relying on removal alone.

Why indoor sprays and foggers are not the answer
Indoor sprays and foggers do not close the route new bugs use to enter, and they may not reach insects sheltered in wall or attic spaces. That makes them a poor substitute for exclusion. Traps may reduce numbers in some circumstances, but they are not complete control. Maryland Extension and the EPA emphasize prevention and physical removal for household problems.
Professional exterior treatment is a conditional option for unusually large outdoor congregations or properties where openings are difficult to seal—not the default first step. Maryland Extension and Penn State Extension describe limits and considerations for insecticide treatments. If you consider one, use a locally licensed operator and follow local guidance.
