Pi Coding Agent Reverses Course and Adds Built-In MCP Support

Pi now includes MCP support, with Codemode for coordinating tool calls in a JavaScript sandbox. The change brings new capabilities but does not solve MCP composition or Pi’s permission limits.

Pi now includes built-in support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), reversing its earlier public opposition. In a post dated 29 September 2026, Earendil Engineering said the change followed developments in MCP and work that produced another useful capability: Codemode, a JavaScript sandbox for coordinating tools. The integration is a product and architecture change, not proof that MCP composition or security problems have been solved.

Why did Pi add MCP support?

Pi’s change was more than a conclusion that MCP had improved enough to adopt. Earendil Engineering says the team followed changes in the protocol, reconsidered its position, and found that the engineering needed to integrate MCP also addressed a broader need: a place for an agent harness to interpret and coordinate tool calls. The company summarized the shift this way: “That MCP is now part of the core is a result of us putting our heads together and rethinking it.” Earendil Engineering’s 29 September 2026 post presents the decision as an attempt to help shape MCP for smaller agent harnesses, not as a claim that the protocol is finished.

The release timing was also reported as a Pi milestone: The Register reported on 2 October 2026 that Pi had reached version 1.0 the previous day, with MCP support among the changes.

What MCP and Codemode do together

MCP provides a way for Pi to connect to tool servers. Codemode handles orchestration in a JavaScript sandbox that runs alongside the harness. Rather than simply placing every available tool definition in the model’s context, the agent can use the sandbox to discover and coordinate tools, decide the order of calls, and combine their results. Earendil describes Codemode as running “where the harness runs.” Its state is retained in the session transcript.

Earendil says Codemode loads automatically when MCP is configured, and that it can also be enabled as a default tool. The company’s design view is that tools should increasingly return structured results and be discoverable through documentation and descriptions. That is the maintainers’ direction for the system, not an established industry standard or an independently measured improvement.

The company’s Linear example

To illustrate the combination, Earendil shows an agent using a Linear MCP server with the Jev decision model: gather issues and comments, classify them, and summarize the results. It is an example from the company’s post, not independent evidence of how well the approach performs across tools or projects.

What remains difficult about MCP?

Built-in support does not remove the protocol’s composition challenges. Earendil says MCP can still be difficult to compose, and that server implementations and harness patterns need improvement. Pi’s adoption is therefore both a change in its own product and an effort by its maintainers to influence how MCP works in smaller agent environments; it should not be read as a declaration that integrations are now uniform or effortless.

What else changed around Pi 1.0?

The Register’s account of the 1.0 milestone lists several other additions: support for virtual models through extensions, deferred tool loading, cache warming for Anthropic models, mid-conversation system messages, a new TUI theme, and full-screen mode by default. Those are separate release changes, not all MCP features.

Pi Durable is separate as well. The Register describes it as a component for coordinating multiple conversations and managing storage through SQLite and JSONL. Earendil characterizes it as a framework for long-running agentic applications, rather than a replacement for the Pi coding agent.

Is Pi still minimal if it supports MCP?

Pi describes itself as a minimal, extensible agent harness. Its website lists interactive, print/JSON, RPC, and SDK modes, plus extensions, skills, prompt templates, and themes. Built-in MCP adds a core integration without changing that broader positioning. The Pi website says MCP extensions remain supported, too.

What should users know about safety?

MCP support is not a security boundary. Pi’s documentation says tools and extensions run with the permissions of the Pi process; project trust controls do not sandbox tool calls. The project repository likewise says Pi has no built-in permission system that restricts filesystem, process, network, or credential access, and recommends containerization or sandboxing when stronger boundaries are needed. If an agent can invoke external services or run code, its effective access depends on the environment in which Pi runs.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

Third-party packages deserve separate scrutiny. The package catalog warns that packages can execute code and influence agent behavior. Its listing for pi-mcp-adapter identifies version 5.0.0 as published on 2 October 2026 and says Pi 0.99 added built-in MCP; installing this particular adapter replaces the built-in MCP extension for Pi sessions. That package-specific behavior does not mean every Pi user needs the adapter.
