The “complete disaster” label is a critical judgment, not an official verdict: the material at issue was a short creature-design demonstration shown during ILM visual-effects chief Rob Bredow’s April 2025 TED talk, not a released Star Wars film or series. TED framed the talk around artist-driven innovation and blending old and new tools; PC Gamer later argued that the AI-generated creatures looked generic and unlike distinctive Star Wars designs.
What was shown at TED
Rob Bredow presented the material in a talk at TED2025 in April 2025. TED described the talk as exploring the evolution of visual effects and the possibility that AI could empower artists rather than replace them, within a broader theme of combining old and new technology. TED’s talk page provides that framing, but does not establish that the demonstration was a finished project or a new Star Wars production.

In a retrospective published December 28, 2025, PC Gamer described the segment as a roughly two-minute Star Wars: Field Guide reel made over two weeks by an ILM artist. The outlet recounted images such as blue lions, tentacled walruses, turtles with alligator heads and zebra-striped chimpanzees. Those duration and production details are PC Gamer’s reporting, not independently documented production records in the sources available here.

PC Gamer called the demonstration embarrassing and characterized it as creative bankruptcy. Its underlying criticism was that the creatures read as combinations of familiar animals rather than as distinctive designs belonging to the Star Wars universe. That is an aesthetic assessment by the outlet, not a measured consensus or a Lucasfilm statement.
#1 Best Overall
- The Skywalker saga’s center trilogy introduces Luke Skywalker, who is drawn into the rebellion against the evil Galactic Empire when he is recruited by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Strong in the Force, Luke is confronted with a shocking truth — while Sith Lord Darth Vader faces a supreme decision.
Some comments in a related Reddit discussion were similarly dismissive, including the blunt reaction that “A blue lion is not Star Wars.” Other commenters treated the reel more charitably—as exploratory mood-board material rather than finished effects work. The exchange illustrates disagreement, but a self-selected discussion cannot establish what viewers generally thought. Read the Reddit discussion.
What the showcase does—and does not—say about ILM
The clip is a narrow example, not a reliable measure of the studio’s overall effects work. Lucasfilm’s history of Industrial Light & Magic describes a practice founded by George Lucas in 1975 that spans practical effects and computer graphics. Its practical traditions include models, miniatures and stop-motion; its later work includes StageCraft, used on productions such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

- The Skywalker saga begins with the story of Anakin Skywalker, a young boy living on the desert planet Tatooine who is unusually strong with the Force. Trained to be a Jedi by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin bristles under the restraints imposed by the Jedi Order — leading to dire consequences throughout the entire galaxy.
That history helps explain the craft tradition invoked by Bredow’s artist-focused framing, but it does not prove that the Field Guide reel was intended as a production-ready pipeline. The available accounts establish a TED demonstration and later criticism—not an announced series, a released Star Wars production, or a verdict on the studio’s broader effects practice.
The real tension: artist-led tools versus the image on screen
TED’s framing presents AI as a possible tool for artists and places the discussion within a longer history of combining techniques. PC Gamer’s response focuses instead on the visible result: creatures it considered generic and incoherent with Star Wars’ visual identity. Those are different questions. A tool may be explored as part of an artist’s process, while a particular demonstration can still fail to persuade viewers that its designs are original or finished.

The reel’s harsh reception therefore supports a limited conclusion: this showcase did not convince some critics that the pictured creatures felt like Star Wars. It does not, on its own, settle whether AI can contribute usefully to visual effects or whether Lucasfilm’s artists will use such tools in future productions.
