If Spotify alone is affected, compare its volume-normalization and equalizer settings before changing streaming quality: quality settings affect fidelity and data use, not playback volume.
First, find out whether Spotify is the source
- Play audio in another app through the same headphones, speakers, or audio route.
- If audio is quiet there too, check the device’s output volume and confirm that sound is going to the intended headphones, speaker, or other output.
- If the problem is limited to Spotify, continue with the app settings below.
This comparison helps narrow down the problem; it is not a guaranteed diagnosis. Spotify’s support documentation describes its playback controls but does not identify one universal cause of quiet or muffled sound.

Adjust Spotify’s volume normalization
Volume normalization balances differences between soft and loud songs. Spotify documents this setting for Premium listeners. On mobile, the available levels are Loud, Normal, and Quiet; Normal is the default, while Loud reduces dynamic variation. These options change how tracks are balanced, not the volume control on your phone or computer.

On iPhone or Android
- Tap your profile picture, then open Settings and privacy > Playback.
- On iPhone, look for Enable Audio Normalization. On Android, look under Volume controls.
- Choose Loud to try a more consistent level in a noisy environment, Normal for Spotify’s default balance, or Quiet for a quieter environment.
- Replay the same passage to compare.
On desktop
- Open your profile menu and choose Settings.
- Look under Audio Quality for Normalize volume and its volume-level control.
- Try a different level and compare the same passage.
Spotify for Artists lists normalization targets of -11 dB LUFS for Loud, -14 dB LUFS for Normal, and -19 dB LUFS for Quiet; Spotify describes -14 dB LUFS as its standard normalization target. These technical targets explain the setting, but they do not guarantee that every song will sound equally loud. Spotify says album playback is normalized as an album so gain compensation does not change between tracks; when listening to a shuffle or a mix of albums, tracks are adjusted individually. Reset the equalizer to check for a muffled tone
An equalizer changes parts of the sound, including bass and treble. A preset or custom curve can make playback seem muffled if it reduces frequencies you expect to hear. Spotify does not name a universal preset that causes this, so use off or neutral as a comparison rather than assuming a particular setting is at fault.
On mobile
- Tap your profile picture and go to Settings and privacy > Playback > Equalizer.
- Turn the equalizer off or return its curve to a neutral position.
- Replay the same passage, then restore a preferred preset or curve if you want it.
On desktop
- Open your profile menu and choose Settings > Playback > Equalizer.
- Turn it off or set the curve to neutral, then compare the same passage.
On Android, a built-in device equalizer may affect other apps too. If the change does not seem limited to Spotify, compare playback with the system equalizer off or neutral as well. See Spotify Support: Equalizer.

Do not use streaming quality as a volume fix
Spotify’s quality options control streaming fidelity and data use. The app lists Automatic, Low, Normal, and High, with Premium adding Very high and Lossless where supported. Spotify gives approximate compressed rates of 24 kbit/s for Low, 96 kbit/s for Normal, 160 kbit/s for High, and 320 kbit/s for Premium Very high. Its current Premium benefits documentation describes Lossless as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC on supported devices. Higher settings can use more data and storage; Spotify says automatic adjustment is intended to avoid stuttering.
These options may matter if music sounds degraded or playback stutters, but Spotify does not present them as volume controls or a remedy for quiet playback. When Spotify Connect or Windows Exclusive mode changes the steps
Spotify Connect
When your phone controls Spotify playing on another device, Spotify says you cannot change audio settings in the mobile controlling app during that remote playback. Make changes using the playback device or its supported controls, or return to local playback to adjust the app settings.
Windows Exclusive mode
Exclusive mode is a specialist Premium feature for compatible external audio hardware, such as a DAC or audio interface—not a general fix for ordinary quiet playback. Spotify says other apps cannot play through the device while Exclusive mode is active. Its guidance for unprocessed playback suggests disabling normalization and the equalizer. The mode does not support Bluetooth headphones, built-in speakers, or virtual devices. See Spotify Support: Exclusive mode.
