Choose the Dalaran that matches the expansion activity you want: Northrend Dalaran for Wrath of the Lich King content, or Broken Isles Dalaran for the Legion campaign. These are expansion-era contexts, not interchangeable destinations. Blizzard’s February 2026 returning-player guide says Dalaran was destroyed during The War Within, so the Legion version is best described as a historical expansion setting—not an unchanged city in the current story.
Which Dalaran should you visit?
| Version | Expansion context | Continent and nearby activity | Choose it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northrend Dalaran | Wrath of the Lich King | Northrend; Wrath-era exploration and activities. Blizzard’s Wrath overview identifies Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord as starting zones. (Blizzard) | Wrath content or a destination specified as Dalaran in Northrend. Blizzard’s Ulduar Timewalking instructions direct raid groups to meet Vormu there during that event. (Blizzard) |
| Broken Isles Dalaran | Legion | Broken Isles; the Legion campaign and its activities. Blizzard’s Legion materials place the Violet Hold and campaign hub functions in this Dalaran. (Blizzard; Blizzard) | Legion quests or activities that direct you to Dalaran in the Broken Isles. |
Why the two versions are easy to confuse
Both are called Dalaran, but the name refers to different expansion contexts. Northrend is the Wrath setting; the Broken Isles version belongs to Legion, where Dalaran served as a campaign hub. Blizzard’s Legion preview describes the city’s relocation to the Broken Isles, while its World Quests guide places Khadgar and the “Uniting the Isles” quest there.

There is also a distinction between an expansion’s playable setting and the present story. Blizzard’s returning-player guide, published February 25, 2026, summarizes The War Within as including “the destruction of Dalaran.” Older descriptions of the Legion city as a place that still resides in the contemporary world should not override that newer story summary. When discussing Legion content, call it “Legion-era Dalaran” or “Broken Isles Dalaran.” (Blizzard)
How to tell which version a quest or activity means
- It names Northrend, Wrath, or Ulduar: look for Northrend Dalaran. Wrath content is set in Northrend, and Blizzard’s Ulduar Timewalking directions specify meeting Vormu in Dalaran there. (Blizzard; Blizzard)
- It names Legion, the Broken Isles, the Violet Hold, or “Uniting the Isles”: it means the Legion-era Broken Isles version. (Blizzard; Blizzard)
- It only says “Dalaran”: use the surrounding quest, campaign, or event context. A city name by itself does not establish which expansion version—or travel method—the instruction means.
Does a portal or Hearthstone determine the version?
Not by itself. A portal, Hearthstone, or event route is a way to travel; it does not tell you which expansion context your quest requires. Blizzard’s Timewalking Campaign guide describes selecting a past expansion campaign and following its quests, but its 2020 eligibility and interface details may have changed. Check the current in-game campaign and quest instructions rather than relying on old level requirements. (Blizzard)
#1 Best Overall
There is no single portal route established as universally available to every character. Blizzard’s Wrath Timewalking and Radiant Echoes articles document Dalaran travel or hub use for those specific events; they are not permanent travel directions or confirmation of a current event schedule. Check the activity’s current instructions in game. (Blizzard; Blizzard)
