Why Some Steam Deck Games Still Won’t Work, No Matter the Hardware

A Steam Deck can be powerful enough for a game and still be blocked by unsupported anti-cheat or middleware. Here’s how to check compatibility and what Proton settings can—and can’t—fix.

For some Steam Deck owners, the biggest limitation is not the handheld’s age or processing power: it is whether a game’s software supports SteamOS. Valve’s Linux-based system and Proton run many Windows games, but anti-cheat systems, launchers, and other middleware can still keep particular titles from working. That is a compatibility and publisher-support problem, not proof that the Steam library generally fails on Deck.

Why a game can fail even when the Deck hardware is capable

The Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system developed by Valve. Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games on SteamOS. Valve says Proton lets most Windows games run without developers having to make extensive porting changes, but “most” does not mean every game or every supporting component works.

A game may depend on an anti-cheat system, launcher, or other middleware that does not support SteamOS or Proton. In that case, the Deck’s ability to render the game is beside the point: the title may fail to launch, block online play, or be unsupported by its publisher. Valve describes the broad compatibility picture on its SteamOS page and in its 2022 SteamOS and Proton booklet.

Anti-cheat can make compatibility a publisher decision

Anti-cheat support is not uniform across games. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility review considers game functionality, launchers, and anti-cheat support, so a title’s rating can reflect software dependencies as well as whether its basic gameplay runs. See Valve’s Steam Deck Verified information for how the program evaluates compatibility.

Apex Legends shows how policy can block access

On October 31, 2024, EA’s Apex Legends team said Linux players would be blocked because it could not reliably distinguish a legitimate Steam Deck running Linux from a malicious cheat claiming to be a Deck. EA wrote: “There is currently no reliable way for us to differentiate a legitimate Steam Deck from a malicious cheat claiming to be a Steam Deck (via Linux).” The announcement said players could still use handhelds if they installed Windows. This was EA’s stated rationale for Apex Legends, not a statement from Valve or a rule that applies to every anti-cheat system. Read the Apex Legends announcement; policies may change.

How to check whether a specific Steam game will work

Do not rely on an old compatibility list for a game you care about. Valve says its reviews are ongoing and that new games and updates arrive every day, so check the current Steam Deck rating and the publisher’s support information before buying or troubleshooting.

  1. Look up the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility information. Check its rating and notes through Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page and the game’s current Steam listing.
  2. Read the caveats, not just the badge. Pay attention to launchers, anti-cheat, and any limitations on functionality; these dependencies may affect whether the game launches or online features work.
  3. Check the publisher’s current support position. For an online game, confirm that its publisher supports SteamOS/Deck and that its anti-cheat policy has not changed since older guides were written.
  4. Account for internet requirements. Installed games can be played offline unless the individual game requires an internet connection. Offline mode does not bypass an online requirement or an anti-cheat exclusion. Valve explains offline play in its Steam Deck FAQ.

Can changing Proton or a compatibility tool fix it?

Sometimes a different compatibility tool is a useful troubleshooting step, but it is not a universal remedy. Valve documents how to select a per-game compatibility tool: open the game’s Properties in Steam and use its compatibility settings to choose a tool. The exact available options can vary by game and software version; see Valve’s Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.

Changing the tool can help with a compatibility issue that the selected tool can address. It cannot force a publisher to support Linux, make an unsupported anti-cheat system accept SteamOS, or remove a game’s internet requirement. If a publisher blocks Linux play, installing Windows is only a workaround where the publisher says it is supported; EA described that option for Apex Legends in its October 2024 announcement.

What this means when choosing a Steam Deck

Valve says the vast majority of its library runs on SteamOS and cites “over 18,000 titles” on its SteamOS page. Valve does not date the “last we checked” behind that figure, so it should not be treated as a verified current count. Nor does it tell you how many games are blocked specifically by anti-cheat. For a buying decision, the relevant question is whether the particular games you play are currently supported—not whether a broad library figure sounds large.

  • Check first: games with online multiplayer, anti-cheat, or third-party launchers, since these dependencies can determine access.
  • Consider offline use: an installed game can work offline if it does not require an internet connection, but that does not change publisher-side restrictions.
  • Treat compatibility as changeable: updates to a game, its middleware, or its support policy can alter the experience, so verify again when a title matters to you.

The Steam Deck OLED does not resolve a SteamOS or anti-cheat restriction. Hardware revisions may matter for other reasons, but they do not by themselves grant software compatibility or publisher permission.
