The Genesis collection is selective, not described as a complete catalog. Nintendo says its classic-game libraries will continue to grow, but it has not provided a schedule or promised specific future titles.
Why is a particular Genesis game missing?
The most accurate answer is that the reason is unknown unless Nintendo or the game’s rights holder has made a title-specific announcement. Nintendo’s official pages do not identify licensing, music rights, technical compatibility, or any other factor as the explanation for a named game’s absence. Those may be discussed as possibilities elsewhere, but they should not be presented as Nintendo’s confirmed reason.

Nintendo’s Genesis product page presents a selection of included games; it does not claim to list every game released for the original console. It also gives no total catalog size or completeness figure, so there is no reliable basis for calculating what percentage is missing. See Nintendo’s current Genesis game list; availability can change.

Will Nintendo add more Genesis games?
Nintendo’s support FAQ says, “All of the Nintendo Classics libraries will continue to grow.” That is a general statement about additions over time—not a release schedule, confirmation of a particular game, or promise that every requested title will arrive. Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics FAQ also says it has no current plans to sell the classic games outside the Nintendo Switch Online service.

There is a concrete example of the library changing: in an announcement dated April 21, 2025, Nintendo said Streets of Rage, Super Thunder Blade, and ESWAT: City Under Siege were coming to the Genesis collection. That announcement shows that additions happen; it does not indicate which games might be next. Read Nintendo Canada’s dated announcement.
How to check whether a game is available
-
Check the live Genesis collection page for the current included-games list. A past announcement or an old list may not reflect the current catalog.

If you are looking for another way to play a specific absent title, verify that exact game’s current availability, platform, region, purchase or subscription terms, and whether the release is official. Nintendo’s FAQ mentions eShop releases and packaged collections as possible ways classic games can reach newer platforms, but that general explanation does not establish that any particular missing Genesis game is available there.

What the Genesis library requires
The Genesis collection is included with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, rather than sold as a set of individually owned games. Nintendo says members can play classic games offline, but the console must verify membership online at least once every seven days. See Nintendo’s Expansion Pack information for service details.
Nintendo also offers an optional Genesis-style Control Pad for compatible play. It is an accessory, not a requirement—and it does not unlock titles that are absent from the library. Nintendo’s Genesis product page describes the collection and controller.
