Why Google Shopping Ads Look Different—and What the Labels Mean

Google Shopping ads and free product listings can look alike. The Sponsored label is the key ad cue; sale, price, shipping and rating annotations describe the offer, not whether it is paid.

Look for the word Sponsored to identify a Google Shopping ad. A product photo, sale badge, price, rating or position on the Shopping tab does not by itself mean the result is paid. Google’s October 13, 2025 announcement says the Sponsored label applies to Shopping ads, while free product listings can appear alongside ads.

Why do Google Shopping ads look like product listings?

Shopping ads are product-ad placements managed through Google Ads and populated with information from a retailer’s Merchant Center account. They can show a product image, title, price, store name and other details. Free product listings also display product information, so the card design alone may not distinguish an ad from an unpaid result.

Google can show free listings on several surfaces, including Google Search, the Shopping tab, Maps, Images, Lens, YouTube and Gemini. A free listing is eligible to appear without the merchant paying for that placement, but eligibility does not guarantee it will be shown. The Shopping tab can include both free listings and ad slots, so appearing there is not proof that a result is paid.

How can I tell whether a result is an ad?

Check the result for Google’s Sponsored label. In an October 13, 2025 announcement, Google Ads vice president Omkar Muralidharan said: “The new ‘Sponsored’ label also applies to other ad units on the search results page, like Shopping ads.” Google’s announcement is the relevant guidance for that label.

Where results appear and how they are grouped can vary. Use the label displayed on the page you are viewing rather than trying to identify an ad by card style, position or visual prominence. Google does not promise one uniform layout across Search, the Shopping tab and its other surfaces.

What do sale, price, shipping and rating labels mean?

These annotations describe an offer or product; they are not, on their own, proof that the placement is an ad. Google may display sale prices, original prices, promotions, shipping details, ratings and other product information. It dynamically selects annotations and badges based on relevance, and not every product will show every annotation. Availability can vary by device, surface and country.

A sale-price annotation, for example, may show the current price alongside the original price and include a sale badge when applicable requirements are met. Those requirements vary across countries and listing types, so a sale badge is not a universal indicator of either a paid placement or a particular discount threshold.

A quick way to compare two product results

  1. Check for “Sponsored.” Treat that explicit label as the key visible cue that the result is an ad.
  2. Note the surface. Search results, the Shopping tab and other Google properties may arrange results differently. The Shopping tab can contain both ads and free listings.
  3. Read offer details separately. Price, sale, shipping, promotion and rating annotations provide product or offer information, not a reliable paid-status signal.

For merchants, Google distinguishes the traffic in its reporting: free listings are reported as organic traffic in Merchant Center, while Shopping ad traffic can be measured through Google Ads. That reporting distinction explains how Google classifies the traffic; shoppers should still look for the Sponsored label on the result itself.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
