Their frustration is clear in the launch-era discussion; how many people actually switched is not. The practical choice for wired-headphone users was to carry an adapter, move to Bluetooth, or choose a phone that kept the jack.
What change made some Pixel owners reconsider?
The complaint in the Pixel 2 announcement discussion was the apparent removal of the 3.5 mm headphone jack. Participants objected to losing a direct way to connect their wired headphones, and the thread repeatedly turned to adapters, Bluetooth and phones that retained the port. The available sources do not establish every launch specification or what accessories were included, so this article focuses on the change discussed by users rather than making broader claims about the phone.

Several commenters described a personal buying response: reconsidering the Pixel 2, skipping it, keeping an older phone or looking at another model. One wrote, “Lack of the headphone jack is an absolute no-go for me”; another said they were “just voicing my displeasure with this.” These are individual comments in a public discussion, not statements from Google or a representative sample of Pixel owners. Read the Hacker News discussion.
Did Pixel owners actually leave Google’s ecosystem?
The thread shows that some participants felt pushed toward another phone, and one commenter worried that switching would mean putting up with another Android maker’s software and update schedule. It does not measure purchases, customer retention or switching rates. “Threatening to leave” describes vocal individual reactions; it should not be read as evidence that Pixel owners broadly abandoned Google’s ecosystem.

What were the practical alternatives?
| Option | What it preserves | Trade-offs raised by commenters |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter | Lets a user keep using compatible wired headphones. | An extra item to carry and keep track of; confirm compatibility with the specific phone. The discussion does not establish that every adapter can support charging at the same time. |
| Bluetooth headphones or earbuds | Wireless listening without connecting headphones to the phone’s audio port. | Commenters mentioned charging, pairing and difficulty switching a headset between devices. Those are reported experiences, not universal outcomes for every accessory. |
| A phone with a 3.5 mm jack | A direct wired connection without relying on an adapter. | It means choosing a different handset. The discussion does not establish a current model recommendation. |
The thread is useful for understanding why the change bothered people, but it contains no controlled comparisons of sound, reliability or convenience. Which option is least troublesome depends on the headphones you already own and how you use them.
What does a current Bluetooth example establish?
Google’s current Pixel Buds 2a specifications say the earbuds pair with Bluetooth 4.0 or later devices, including Android and iOS phones, tablets and laptops. That confirms compatibility claims for this product category today; it does not establish the Pixel 2’s launch-era accessory options or mean these earbuds are right for every listener. Check the Pixel Buds 2a specifications for current details, which may change.

- The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
- Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
How to choose if you still use wired headphones
- If keeping your existing headphones matters most, check whether a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter works with your phone before buying. Do not assume it also allows charging.
- If you prefer not to connect headphones by cable, Bluetooth is an option, but consider charging, pairing and whether you need to move between a phone and laptop.
- If you want a direct wired connection and do not want an adapter, treat a built-in 3.5 mm jack as a phone-selection requirement and verify it on the exact model you are considering.
The launch-era objections were about a tangible change in everyday use, not evidence of a measured exodus. For people attached to wired headphones, losing the jack turned an otherwise routine listening setup into a choice between an accessory, a wireless alternative or a different phone.
