Short answer: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) records identify particular chargers and power banks sold on Amazon.com that could overheat or ignite. They do not show that Amazon’s entire catalog is dangerous. The useful question is whether your exact product, model and battery pairing appears in a current warning or recall.
The examples below involve U.S. products and CPSC actions. Customer reports, an agency warning, a formal recall and a legal determination are different kinds of evidence, so their numbers should not be combined into a marketplace-wide risk rate.

What the official records actually identify
CPSC actions concern named products, not Amazon products in general. These are the principal examples in the records reviewed:
| Product or action | What CPSC reported | Consumer direction or remedy |
|---|---|---|
| SafPow SPC-42020 and AMPOWSURE ASP-C10S42020 chargers | Chargers sold for 36-volt lithium batteries in micromobility products were marketed as universal but were incompatible with some advertised products. CPSC said using them with an incompatible battery can cause the connected battery to ignite. The firms refused to conduct a recall. | Immediately stop using the two named models and dispose of them, following the current CPSC notice. |
| INIU power banks (recall notice dated December 5, 2025) | About 210,000 units were covered. CPSC said the lithium-ion battery can overheat and ignite. | The notice lists a refund. Check the current notice and its contact instructions to determine eligibility. |
| Earlier Amazon portable-power-bank recall | Amazon received 53 reports of overheating for that particular recalled product, including one report of chemical burns from battery acid and four reports of property damage involving fire or smoke. | Consumers were told to unplug and stop using the units and contact Amazon for return and refund instructions. |
The charger warning and the two power-bank records describe different products and periods. A count from one recall cannot be used as a rate for all goods sold on Amazon.

Why a “universal” charger can be dangerous
The charger warning is about compatibility, not simply the word “universal.” CPSC said the SafPow and AMPOWSURE models were advertised for broad micromobility use even though they were not compatible with every battery and product named in their marketing. With an incompatible battery, the connected battery can ignite.
A voltage label such as “36 V” is therefore not enough to establish a safe match. The battery chemistry, charging requirements, connector and the device maker’s specifications all have to agree. Do not assume that a plug fits safely or that a listing’s “universal” description has been independently validated.

How to check whether an Amazon product has been recalled
- Identify the exact item. Record the manufacturer, model number, battery or capacity designation, and any date or lot code on the product and packaging. Save the Amazon order, seller name and listing title.
- Search the CPSC recall and warning records. Search by the model number and manufacturer, not only by a generic term such as “power bank” or “e-bike charger.” Read the entire notice, including photographs and identifying details.
- Compare the notice with your unit. A similar appearance or brand is not enough. Confirm the model and other identifiers match the notice.
- Follow that notice’s stop-use instruction immediately. A warning may require stopping use even when a company has not conducted a formal recall. A recall may instead specify a refund, replacement, repair or return process.
- Use only the stated remedy. Contact the address or phone number in the current CPSC or manufacturer notice. Keep proof of purchase and do not send a product anywhere unless the notice tells you how.
Recall pages and remedies can change. Recheck the live CPSC notice immediately before acting, especially for a product purchased years earlier.
What to do if a power bank or charger overheats
- For a recalled power bank, unplug it and stop using it, as the CPSC notice directs.
- For the specifically named SafPow SPC-42020 and AMPOWSURE ASP-C10S42020 chargers, stop using them immediately and dispose of them according to the current warning.
- Do not keep charging a device to see whether the heat goes away, and do not substitute an unverified charger while you investigate.
- If the product is smoking, burning or causing an active fire, leave the area and call emergency services. Do not handle a visibly damaged or burning lithium-battery product.
Those actions do not replace the product-specific instructions in the current notice. The notice controls whether the remedy is disposal, return, refund or another option.

Can you use a universal charger for an e-bike battery?
Not merely because the charger is advertised as universal. The CPSC warning shows that the named 36-volt micromobility chargers were incompatible with some products for which they were marketed.
- Find the exact battery model and charging specification from the battery or vehicle maker.
- Verify that the replacement charger is explicitly listed as compatible with that battery and device, including voltage, connector and charging requirements.
- Check the exact charger model and seller listing; do not rely on a generic category label.
- If the manufacturer’s documentation does not confirm the pairing, do not use it. Ask the battery or vehicle maker for a compatible replacement.
If you are searching for a replacement, use a narrow phrase such as replacement charger matched to e-bike battery model and then verify the model against the manufacturer’s specifications. No particular replacement charger or listing is endorsed here.

Warning, recall, incident report and legal determination: what each means
| Evidence type | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| CPSC product warning | An agency has identified a named product and given a safety instruction, such as stopping use. | It does not prove that every similar product or every Amazon listing has the same defect. |
| Recall notice | A specific product is subject to a defined corrective action, such as a refund or return. | Its incident count is not a marketplace-wide failure rate. |
| Consumer incident report | Reports associated with the particular product and period described on the notice. | It is not a complete count of all incidents involving other products. |
| CPSC legal determination | An agency decision about legal responsibilities for covered products. | It does not declare all third-party goods on Amazon unsafe. |
What CPSC’s Amazon decision covers
In July 2024, CPSC unanimously determined that Amazon was a “distributor” under the Consumer Product Safety Act for certain defective or noncompliant third-party products sold through Fulfilled by Amazon. That determination concerned those covered products and the agency’s legal proceeding.
In June 2025, CPSC announced a final order requiring steps for Amazon to notify purchasers and the public about affected hazardous products and to remove those products from commerce and consumers’ possession through return or destruction incentives. The order should not be read as a finding that every third-party product or every Amazon listing is unsafe.

How to interpret the reported numbers
CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka’s 2024 statement cited 156 fire and thermal incidents involving “universal” micromobility chargers during the first four and a half months of 2024. That figure is a statement about the incidents and period described by the commissioner; it is not a rate for all Amazon products.
The approximately 210,000 INIU power banks and the 53 overheating reports belong to separate, product-specific recall records. Their periods, products and denominators differ, so adding them together would create a misleading statistic.
What remains unknown
The records do not establish how many Amazon-sold products overall have exploded or caught fire, nor the percentage of listings that present a fire hazard. They also do not verify the safety or compatibility of any current replacement-charger listing. A safe purchasing decision requires the exact battery model, the maker’s compatibility documentation and the precise charger model.
