Scientists Built a Ball of Plasma They Call a “Mini-Sun”—Here’s What It Actually Does

The “mini-sun” is a three-meter-wide hollow sphere at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. It contains helium plasma and magnetic fields that let scientists model specific solar-wind processes—not a miniature star, a fusion reactor, or a source of usable energy.

What the “mini-sun” is

The apparatus, known as the Big Red Ball or Big Red Plasma Ball, is a laboratory device built to investigate how plasma and magnetic fields behave around the Sun. Its nickname describes the analogy, not its scale or astrophysical status.

The sphere was reported as three meters wide by the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2019. Inside, scientists can place probes and measure conditions at multiple locations in a controlled environment—something spacecraft cannot do as flexibly in the solar wind.

How the plasma experiment worked

  1. Fill the chamber: Researchers pumped helium into the hollow sphere.
  2. Create plasma: They ionized the helium, producing electrically charged gas.
  3. Apply magnetic and electric forces: A strong magnet at the center and an electric current stirred and rotated the plasma.
  4. Measure the flow: Probes recorded plasma behavior and magnetic fields throughout the apparatus.

This arrangement created a scaled laboratory model of selected processes in a magnetized stellar wind. It did not reproduce the Sun’s size, temperature, composition, gravity, or nuclear reactions.

What scientists observed

The Parker spiral

The 2019 Nature Physics paper reported that the experiment reproduced the Parker spiral: the Sun’s magnetic field is carried outward by the flowing solar wind and becomes spiral-shaped through the heliosphere. The laboratory measurements supported the physical picture proposed by Eugene Parker for how those plasma flows shape the field.

Quasi-periodic plasma blobs

The apparatus also produced repeated plasma outflows. News coverage called them “plasma burps”; technically, they are quasi-periodic plasma blobs or plasmoids. The paper connects these structures with plasmoids associated with the slow solar wind and describes magnetic reconnection as part of the process.

That result matters because it gives scientists a way to examine the formation and motion of such structures under repeatable laboratory conditions. It is evidence for a useful physical model, not a claim that the sphere emits an actual solar wind into space.

How this differs from a real Sun

Feature Big Red Ball laboratory model The Sun and its solar wind
Purpose Study selected plasma-flow and magnetic-field processes Natural stellar system producing solar radiation and solar wind
Working material Ionized helium created inside a chamber Extremely hot, naturally occurring solar plasma with varied composition
Driving forces Applied electric current and a central magnet Solar rotation, magnetic fields, heating and expansion in the corona
Energy source External laboratory equipment Nuclear fusion in the Sun’s core
Scale Three-meter-wide sphere, as reported by UW–Madison in 2019 A star roughly 1.4 million kilometers across

The comparison is therefore about dynamics. Calling the device a “mini-sun” does not mean it has the Sun’s internal structure or that it performs fusion.

Why build a laboratory model instead of relying only on spacecraft?

Space missions measure the real solar environment, while a laboratory device allows researchers to control inputs, repeat conditions and place diagnostics throughout the flow. The two approaches answer different parts of the problem.

Direct measurements from missions such as NASA’s Parker Solar Probe reveal what the solar wind is doing in its natural setting. The Big Red Ball lets scientists isolate mechanisms—such as magnetic-field geometry, plasma rotation and reconnection—that are difficult to separate in space. The Nature Physics paper presents the laboratory model as complementary to spacecraft observations, not as a replacement for them.

What the 2019 result does—and does not—show

  • It shows that a controlled plasma experiment can reproduce a Parker-spiral magnetic structure.
  • It shows repeated plasma blobs analogous to plasmoids linked with the slow solar wind.
  • It supports laboratory experiments as a way to investigate fundamental plasma physics.
  • It does not recreate the whole Sun or establish every detail of how the solar wind originates.
  • It does not demonstrate nuclear fusion, fusion power, or any practical energy source.
  • It does not make the sphere a miniature star or cause it to produce space weather on Earth.

When the “mini-sun” result was published

The University of Wisconsin–Madison news report was dated 29 July 2019. Ethan E. Peterson and colleagues’ paper, “A laboratory model for the Parker spiral and magnetized stellar winds,” was published in Nature Physics on 29 July 2019. Space.com’s accessible report by Passant Rabie followed on 1 August 2019.

Peterson, the study’s lead author and a UW–Madison graduate student at the time, summarized the broader significance: “Our work shows that laboratory experiments can also get at the fundamental physics of these processes.”
