Research points to a combination: consistent, intelligible use and links to established concepts help ideas fit into later work, while prominent researchers and cross-community connections help them reach more people. Neither visibility nor citation counts prove that an idea is correct.
What makes an academic idea easier to adopt?
An idea needs more than an initial announcement. Later researchers have to recognize what it means and see how it can be used in their own work. A large 2023 study by Mengjie Cheng and colleagues tracked nearly 60,000 new ideas introduced from 1993 to 2016 across roughly 38 million later publications. Rather than treating citations as the whole story, the researchers examined how concepts and terms were used over time.

Consistent use gives an idea a clear shape
When researchers use an idea in coherent, recognizable ways, later authors can build on it without having to reinvent its meaning. In the study’s model, holding age and other modeled variables constant, a one-standard-deviation increase in ideational consistency was associated with an estimated 53% increase in the number of later articles using the idea. That is an association in this study, not a causal effect or a forecast for any particular idea.

Ideas that connect to prominent concepts or established research traditions can be easier to understand and apply. The 2023 study found positive associations between diffusion and measures of an idea’s embeddedness and prominence as well as its consistency. A related 2019 record on academic conference publications and computer-science coauthorship networks offers a compatible lens: connectivity may help ideas bridge novelty and familiarity. The available record supports this as a brief complement, not as evidence equal in scope to the 2023 analysis.

How do scholars and institutions carry ideas between communities?
Ideas move through people and networks, not just through their wording. Cheng and colleagues found that diffusion was associated with adoption by socially prominent researchers and with users spanning diverse research communities. A scholar who introduces an idea to a different field can expose it to researchers who otherwise might not encounter it.
Prominent researchers can increase visibility
Researchers with established reputations or broad networks may give an idea more opportunities to be noticed and tried. That visibility can help diffusion, but it does not establish that the idea is sound or that prominence alone explains its uptake.

Hiring networks can transmit research topics
A 2018 study by Allison C. Morgan, Dimitrios J. Economou, Samuel F. Way, and coauthors examined faculty hiring as one route for ideas to move among computer-science departments in the United States and Canada. Their dataset included 5,032 hires at 205 Ph.D.-granting departments and 200,476 associated publications. They found evidence that hiring helped spread some topics, including topic modeling, incremental computation, quantum computing, and mechanism design. In their test, the effect was not significant for deep learning.

Why does an idea’s career change over time?
An idea’s meaning and use can shift as researchers in different communities adopt and adapt it. Cheng and colleagues report that social and conceptual conditions become increasingly important later in an idea’s career: what matters is not only an initial burst of attention, but whether the idea becomes integrated into ongoing research. As the authors put it, “Ideas are not static—and neither are how people use them.”
This helps explain why early attention and durable use are different outcomes. A concept may attract notice but fail to become a stable tool for later work; another may spread gradually as researchers clarify it, connect it to existing ideas, and apply it in new settings.

How can you compare the spread of two ideas?
These are useful questions for describing diffusion, not a score of an idea’s truth or quality:
Recommended Free Tools
- Is use consistent? Do later papers use the idea in intelligible, recognizable ways?
- What does it connect to? Does it link to established research traditions or prominent concepts?
- Who is using it? Do adopters come from distinct research communities?
- Who carries it? Are influential or well-connected researchers introducing it to others?
- What network routes exist? Could hiring or other institutional connections expose it to new departments?
- At what point in its career? Are you measuring initial attention or sustained use and integration?
Why citations do not tell the whole story
Citations are useful evidence of scholarly attention, but they are an incomplete measure of how an idea spreads. They can misattribute an idea’s origin, and a concept that has become familiar may be used without repeatedly citing its original source. The 2023 study’s approach—tracking concepts and terms across publications—offers another view of diffusion, though text and publication records cannot capture every informal discussion, class, conference conversation, or online exchange.

Does a viral idea have to be a good idea?
No. Diffusion describes uptake, not validity. An idea may travel because it offers a useful intellectual connection, because researchers with strong networks promote it, or because institutional structures give it greater exposure. Those forces can operate alongside intellectual merit, but popularity alone cannot establish that a claim is true. The broad 2023 analysis is observational, and the 2018 study covers a narrower set of computer-science departments and one transmission mechanism; neither shows that a single factor causes academic success.
For context, the 2023 study analyzed a wider publication corpus of 38,578,016 articles spanning 1900–2016, while its set of nearly 60,000 new ideas covers 1993–2016. These are different scopes within the same study, not interchangeable counts. Read “How New Ideas Diffuse in Science” in American Sociological Review. For the computer-science hiring-network study, see “Prestige drives epistemic inequality in the diffusion of scientific ideas”.
