Choose by how you prefer to draw, what fits your desk and budget, and whether you can position the screen and tablet comfortably in your actual workstation.
What is the difference between a pen tablet and a pen display?
A screenless pen tablet has a drawing surface separate from your computer monitor. You move the pen on the tablet while looking at the monitor, so your hand and eyes work in different places. A pen display puts the drawing on the device’s screen, letting you look directly where the pen touches.

The choice is primarily about workflow and setup, not a proven ergonomic ranking. Consider the space required for the tablet and monitor together, how comfortable indirect hand-eye coordination feels, whether you need to carry the device, and your budget. The community question about whether a pen tablet is more ergonomic than a display reflects a common concern, but it is not evidence that one category prevents discomfort.
Which tablet type fits your workspace and workflow?
| Factor | Screenless pen tablet | Pen display |
|---|---|---|
| Where you draw | On a separate surface while looking at the computer monitor. | Directly on the device’s screen. |
| Desk space | Allow room for both tablet and monitor arrangement. | Allow room for the display, cables, and any support stand. |
| What to check for neck position | Assess the monitor and tablet arrangement together. | Check screen height and tilt; a low or flat screen can require awkward viewing posture. |
| Compatibility to confirm | Exact model, computer operating system, and connection method. | Exact model, operating system, video connection, and power requirements. |
| Key question | Does drawing on one surface while looking at another suit you? | Can you position the screen at a usable height and angle for your work sessions? |
These are setup and workflow considerations, not the results of a clinical comparison or product test.

How should you position a pen display to check neck comfort?
Screen placement matters regardless of tablet category. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration says, “A display screen that is too high (Figure 5) or low will cause you to work with your head, neck, shoulders, and even your back in awkward postures.” Its monitor guidance recommends positioning the top line of the screen at or slightly below eye level and arranging workstation components to support neutral postures.
There is no single layout that works for everyone. OSHA’s computer workstation guidance notes that arrangements vary by individual. Check the setup from your regular chair at your actual desk, rather than judging a tablet by its appearance in a product photo. If a pen display sits too low or flat for comfortable viewing, an adjustable support may help you change its height or tilt. Match any stand to the device’s dimensions and weight; OSHA’s advice supports adjustability as a workstation principle, not a particular tablet stand.

Recheck your position during longer work sessions and change position periodically. A vendor discussion of possible strain during prolonged flat-screen use can provide context, but it is not independent clinical evidence that a display causes neck pain or that a specific setup prevents it: Wacom’s posture discussion.
What specifications should you verify before buying?

How can you make the choice?
- Choose the drawing workflow. If looking at a separate monitor while drawing feels natural, consider a screenless tablet. If you want to draw directly on the image, consider a pen display.
- Measure the real workstation. Account for the monitor and tablet together, or for the display, cables, and support stand. Include enough clearance to position the screen usefully.
- Check compatibility and specifications. Verify the exact model’s operating system, connections, active area or screen size, and pen requirements before ordering.
- Test the viewing position. Sit in your usual chair and assess screen height and tilt. For a display that needs adjustment, look for a compatible stand with suitable height and tilt range and a weight rating for the device.
