That experience—not a rule that every great computer had to follow—is the idea behind the claim that the best computers boot to BASIC. Today, Thoreau BASIC offers a modern take, including a build designed to start on x64 computers with UEFI.
What does it mean to boot straight into BASIC?
BASIC is a programming language, and on many 8-bit home computers its interpreter was ready as soon as the machine started. Rather than first navigating a desktop or launching a separate programming application, users could enter commands at the prompt and begin experimenting.

That made programming feel like a built-in capability of the computer, not a specialized activity reserved for a separate tool. Jenny List captured the appeal in Hackaday on August 27, 2026: “The machine invited you to program it, and no doubt many of our middle aged readers are here today because they ran with that.” It is a reflection on the experience, not a measured claim about how every owner learned to program.
How Thoreau BASIC brings the experience to modern PCs
Thoreau BASIC is a contemporary interpreter that its publisher describes as a free 64-bit interpreter for x64 Windows and x64 UEFI. The Windows package runs in Windows; the UEFI package is intended to boot directly on compatible x64 machines with UEFI, without first starting Windows. Hackaday describes it as a bare-metal interpreter for x86 machines with UEFI.

The distinction matters: having a Windows download does not mean a PC starts in BASIC, while a UEFI boot build is intended to make that direct-start experience possible. The available details do not establish compatibility with every x64 computer or provide a machine-by-machine compatibility list, so check the project’s documentation for your hardware before relying on the boot build.
What the interpreter offers
Hackaday characterizes Thoreau BASIC as largely compatible with GW-BASIC, a line-numbered dialect familiar to users of classic Microsoft BASIC. The publisher also describes features that extend beyond the original prompt-and-text experience, including wavetable sound, graphics, networking, debugging, and native x64 execution.
Rank #2
- Graphics: Hackaday highlights high-resolution 24-bit graphics, bitmap loading, and multiple text windows.
- Sound and networking: The publisher lists wavetable sound and networking among the interpreter’s capabilities.
- Debugging: Debugging tools are included, according to the publisher.
- Memory: Hackaday says memory is based on what the system reports, rather than specifying a fixed amount in its overview.
These are project descriptions, not an independent compatibility test or performance benchmark. The sources do not provide a systematic list of supported graphics hardware, network configurations, or programs.
Where to get Thoreau BASIC
As listed on the publisher’s page, Thoreau BASIC is at version 3.2, with separate Windows and UEFI downloads as well as documentation and sample programs. The page describes the project as in development and offers the download on a “Name your own price” basis. These details can change; consult the publisher’s Thoreau BASIC page for current files, requirements, and status.

It recreates one important part of that experience: starting at a BASIC prompt and having a language ready to explore. But Thoreau BASIC is modern x64 software, not an 8-bit computer, and the publisher’s feature list includes capabilities such as networking and native x64 execution. If what you want is the old interaction model on current hardware, the UEFI build is the relevant option; if you want the original hardware and its particular limitations, a modern interpreter is not a substitute.
